Anyone pick up on this story?

It's a couple from Brighton who are clearly anti-establishment and don't believe in formal education. Their five year old can count to 20 but that's about it.

Each to their own I thought at first but then I considered it some more and this kid is going to be unleashed upon society in 13 years time.

The icing on the cake was when I read that they had a GoFundMe page setup looking for £100k in donations so they could move to Costa Rica!

If the child turns out as you fear, £100k may be money well-spent! I don't have a problem with someone deciding they want to live the "alternative" lifestyle as long as a) it doesn't impact on the wellbeing of their kids and b) they don't expect the taxpayer to fund it. There is nothing wrong with home schooling if done properly but I worry about the child missing out on the social aspects of school. There are homeschool groups about that address this and, to be honest, a kid will do better in that environment than they would in a bad school.

there are illegal encampments full of people the same, across the length and breadth of the country.

legitimate home schooling is something I do agree with, its every parents right, but its not easy and there is a strict criteria to follow, I have heard that its on the rise considerably, I think you have to be careful that the child doesn't end up friendless, but you can focus on the childs needs and strengths and not worry about them being politically brainwashed or being held back by other children.

At 5 years old? Is that true?

Very and surprisingly common, my wife worked in a school in Luton and the amount of kids that didn't know numbers or the full alphabet was shocking, and I am not just talking about reception age she mainly worked with 8-9 year olds. Biggest problem is some people consider it the schools job to teach their children and take no responsibility themselves at home. Most heartbreaking thing for my wife was when she read the class a fairy-tale and for many of them it was the first time an adult had sat down and read a story to them.

We considered homeschooling our kids until about 7 or 8 as feel 4 is too young really for kids to go proper school. The thing that put us off though was the overwhelming amount of weirdos, misfits and hippies that do it and being honest I wouldn't want my kids getting their social lessons from these people. I am not saying everyone is like that but I am sure "normal" family's that home school know what I am saying. I have decided now my kids go to school to socialise and learn things I can't teach them at home, it is my responsibility to ensure they are keeping up with the syllabus. For early years it's a surprisingly little amount of actual time you need one on one to keep them on track or ahead.

There are kids in full time education cant count to 20.

Also kids having left education not being fit for purpose in the employment market, sadly a lot and their parents don't seem to give a fig as they know the benefit system will guarantee more money than a lot of genuine workers doing their best?

Who was that throbber who was on here and posting about his alternative life?

Broadly it amounted to child neglect (no school, no doctors and no registration at all with the system) and him wanting to do as little as possible at the expense of others under the banner of being alternative.

Whenever I see something 'alternative' on the TV about how someone is living off the land or has dropped out of main stream society, the end result is always that the person in question is having a massive claim up on the state or sponging off others / family.

Everything has to be paid for one way or another.

Edit : Milo / that was the fella. Met a sticky end on the air gun BBS once outed for various issues of inaccuracy

you can be alternative without opting out of society and being a parasite, its called having a personality and character, and developing a prodigious work ethic.

I have a relative who was considered gifted when we were young, she looked down her nose at you intellectually, she ended up as a nobody, drifting from bloke to bloke, she couldn't drop the lefty habits she was exposed to at university.

I hope their children will eventually appreciate the gift that is free spirited parents. I wouldn't like them to end up with zero education, no job, no work ethic, thinking a "Just Giving" page would get them through life.

They are the ones who suffer from their parents little experiment.
