I want to try those. They're subsonic, apparently, and I expect they pattern very well.

all 12gauge loads......

of all the loads i ever create, those subsonics still to this day really suprise me how they pattern so well, not that much hot core but uniform patterns that are easilly 3/4 the size of normal patterns.

i patterned my original subs through a 1/4 choke but with changing, it does nothing to the pattern, it stays the same quality. that was with #4s.

now i have not patterned mt 42g subsonics, or 21gram load (thankyou roughshooter).

i would assume that it would produce as good patterns in the 20s....

nb, i use very hard italian lead.

This coincides with my recent experience patterning the Eley Fourlong .410 cartridge. They're listed as (marginally) subsonic on the Eley website, and though I suspect they were going supersonic on the day of testing (a week ago last Sunday - 30°C outside) due to the heat, their performance was first rate - I mean, really, really impressive. I'd like to see what they'd do in winter when it's -10°C outside and they're really subsonic.

This was a 12½g/#7 cartridge putting as many pellets into the circle at 30 yards as the Fiocchi Magnum load with 19g of the same size shot managed. Pattern percentages were in the low 80% range at best. I've never seen anything like it in a .410 previously. If you get to 70% with anything in that gun you're doing well. Even the "official" Eley 3" subsonic loading doesn't get close to this kind of performance.

So there it is again chaps: velocity kills patterns.

(If anyone wants a copy of the data, send me a PM.)

The shotgun, barrel and chokes also make a great difference. Must do because the Fiocchi 3 inch Magnum 19grm shells pattern extremely well in my Yildiz with full and full. It is a matter of buying a few boxes and giving them a thorough pattern and penetration tests. remember, the pellets might just pattern well but wouldn't get through two sheets of wet paper never mind an inch thick solid slab which well represents the breast meat of a pheasant or pigeon.

on edit... note the present day Fiocchi 410s are listed at 18gr but are in all effect the same as the 19gr but apparently Fiocchi where not happy that their machine was loading exactly 19 ... trade descriptions and all that. Have weighed a few

and they do vary just below 19grms but still do the job if I do.

The old saying from muzzle loading days is "little powder much lead shoots far kills dead"......and "patttern kills"........through past experience, I subscribe to these views.
