stuartyboy
Does anyone have a subsonic load for a 410 that is comparable to a 9mm garden gun cartridge in terms of power and noise but with a bit more power ie possibly 9gram load travelling at 800 fps? Its for a noise sensitive, close range pest control job and I'm weighing up the best options. Thanks guys
Stonepark
What powders do you have access to?

stuartyboy
I would have to buy all the components and powder required as this is just an idea at the moment and I no reloading equipment. I have been recommended the 2" shells before but I believe that they still have a fair crack off them and I really only need something for a very limited range
neutron619
Beware the ultra-low muzzle velocities or make sure you use big enough shot. You won't have any trouble keeping a (very small) pattern together at short ranges with a subsonic loading, so you'll get good density, even if the pattern is the size of a tea plate. However, when you get down to that kind of speed (a garden gun pushes about 600fps) penetration on any game will be an issue. It just so happens that I was testing the Fiocchi 7g / #7½ cartridge in my garden gun today - it failed to reliably penetrate three layers of corrugated cardboard. These were brand new, "movers" packing boxes, so sturdy, possibly 3-ply cardboard all the same, but I found essentially undamaged pellets rolling around on the floor of the box between the 2nd and 3rd layers. I don't point that gun at anything alive, but it was food for thought. Edited September 9, 2017 by neutron619
stuartyboy
OK thanks guys. Can I ask another, purely hypothetical question which I've been debating with someone about. If you wanted a low powered subsonic shotgun load, rather than build one from scratch with all the necessary components, could you open up a number of shop bought cartridges, and gradually reduce the powder in a series of factory produced cartridges and chronograph each cartridge until you get the desired speed? As I say, its purely hypothetical in response to an argument I've been having but did make me wonder if it was possible.
Ultrastu
I've done that . It works .
Ultrastu
I take it an airgun isnt an option.for this sensitive pest control job ?
stuartyboy
Air rifle is a possibility. Just weighing up the options at the moment.
Alpha Mule
Unless you have a moderator on the barrel, you will still get the bang. There isn't much difference (sound wise) between standard speed and subsonic, from an unmoderated gun.
Walker570
Not knowing the layout but if it was in a heavily built up area and you had to be real quiet then I would use my TX200 air rifle which has a silencer fitted and bait the target and shoot from a hidden position/pop up blind. I have tried all sorts of subs in my 410s, even my Mossy and they are still not what I call quiet. Precise head shots with a good air rifle at up to 15 -20yrds and the job is done, obviously closer the better, but 15yrds no problem. Floating Chamber
Have you tried 2" cartridges?
