ditchman
you can see the old cack deep in the chequering that needs to come out....................... next .....wait for it.........use a stiff paintbrush and wash and scrub the whole thing in petrol...........yes yes yes ...i can hear the groans..... the reason is ...IT DONT RAISE THE GRAIN......all will come clear later........... then rub it gently off with a clean rough cotton rag/towel............ ditchman
as you can see the chequering is coming out nice and will tighten up when the petrol have evapourated...........then out into the sun by the shed door... ditchman
as you can see the drying process is quick.....................its 11.30 now and those pics were taken an hour ago......the grain has not raised at all and the surface is undamaged and flat.................... and finally one pic for my old abusive mate ...partner in crime VIKING... ditchman
right i will post these up and then thats the lot for me today............ cleaned up the rubber funiture with s/s wire brush and rubbed in silicon grease....trigger guard had seen better days ........scratches !....so buffed them off sanded down the BEECH stock.............when it was made it was pressure treated with primary stain which was forced in ......with varying results....Beech is a total and utter ******* to get stain and the right colour ....if you do it normal.....but im not normal and have learned an old indian trick...which you will see the results of later............ ditchman
as you can see the chequering is not damaged....you can also see the residual stain in the wood....(no matter)........ and then i put the first thin stain on...which is okay when wet but not dark enuff....it is only there to give it depth...........
ditchman
this is what Beech goes like when you stain it the usual way............................. it looks rubbish...you see some of the grain is very tight and some of it is open.....a total pig as i want the wood to look like a conker fresh out of the shell with that depth and gloss...........which we will end up with...(i hope)
ditchman
right ....im still using the exact same stain to get the base coulour....you can see a "fore an after"............so i build this coulour up until it is even using the "ole ditch method".. ditchman
its a bit difficult to get the light right to show you....you get the idea.........(im no david bailey)
ditchman
hung it up outside ...better light....and to leave it to dry.................. ...........next will be wire wool on it and the start of oiling..........the first couple of hours is messy...then its starts to bloom and stabilise............. so thats yer bloody lot for today

ditchman
Sooo the stock dried overnight...and it was time to start removing the top layer with fine wire wool and BLO..........you can see on one of the pics...the scorching that needs to be cut thro' to get underneath........
ditchman
reasonably happy with what is underneath...........dropped the metalwork in to check for colour match.............
ditchman
colour match seems to be alright............the wood and striping is a lot darker and even now....even darker than the stained varnish it had when it was new ..........and wood is starting to look alive.............i have tested it with clean fingertips and it has stabilised underneath and no stain coming off....so i will start to tidy it up and oil it.......before i deceide it it needs further darkening............. ditchman
right im going to start oiling it for a while and smoothing it off with wire wool....and keep checking the colour....im sure it will continue to darken somewhat......if it dosnt i will start the scorching process again............................... ...............time will tell...........
