deadeyedick
How long does delivery usually take? Does one have to pay customs charge when they reach the UK?
Elma Fud
I've not bought anything from cabelas directly. The exchange rate with America is the best its been for a number of years. I've bought a number of items from there via E Bay. Of all the items purchased, I've only had to pay import tax once. £10 tax £9 handling fee. You may be lucky and not get charged at all. Jonnyni
I have bought a load of gear from cabela's and am waiting on another 2 orders to come. You will get hit with import tax but with the exchange rate the way it is and buying from the 'bargan cave' (sale items) you can't go far wrong. There is a lot of stuff you cannot get over here and the quality is excellent. 20% shipping. 20-30% import tax/duties and handling charge. 3-5 weeks shipping Sounds a lot but its still cheaper than here. rjimmer
I'm told that the cheapest way is to get it delivered to a friend in America who then sends it to you as a gift! This avoids certain taxes, so they say! The shipping, that you reinburse your friend, might also be cheaper!
webber
rjimmer Jonnyni is correct. When you order you stipulate if you want Air mail 40% (no thanks) or surface @ 20% When the post man comes knocking on your door he will demand the import duty, usually a few %. £8 Royal Mail handling charges and 17.5% VAT. Surface does take several weeks; I have waited between 3 & 9 weeks from notification of despatch. I do think that Cabelas are over the top with their delivery charges, but with the $ as it is, and many Cabelas prices as low as they are its worth it. webber
rjimmer
As far as I remember, Cabelas put the percentage on for carriage but do it at cost and are supposed to credit your account, with them, with the difference.
Jonnyni
20% shipping is a bit OTT but there customer service is excellent. I recently bought a pair of hunting boots and got Cabela's to send them to a hotel in america where two friends where on holiday and they brought them back . $12 dollars shipping no tax no import duty . webber
I havnt noticed any credits coming back for postage. You will avoid VAT etc on small orders, but check Cabelas terms, you will find that they have a minimum charge for overseas customers. I usually order a minimum of $200, this avoids the Cabelas minimum, and breaks the Royal mail charge down to less than 4%. You get clobbered for the vat, but you would pay that here anyway. I received 2 pairs of Redsetter boots a few weeks ago, one pair $60, the other $70, similar boots here were £140, I am well impressed. Read the descriptions carefully. I wanted a pair of realtree bibs, waterproof, breathable, but not insulated. The bibs came with the boots; insulated!!! I chcked the description again and it was my mistake, too expensive to send them back. I now have two pairs. If you are going to buy boots, beware American sizes vary from ours. Do a search on the Cabelas site and you will find some very usefull size reference charts, make sure that you use them! webber
Cranfield
I agree that Cabelas shipping charges are too high. Other US Exporters are lower, it pays to shop around. If you ask friends in America to post stuff to you, you will still have to pay Customs duty. When they go to their Post Office, or wherever, to post it, they will have to fill in a Customs form stating the value of contents (like we do here). They can lie, of course, but if the package is checked, the fines are very, very high.
rjimmer
If you ask friends in America to post stuff to you, you will still have to pay Customs duty. Even if it's secondhand? Perhaps I read it wrong. There is a lot of wrong information on forums.
Cranfield
Jim, I have friends in the US who send us Christmas and Birthday presents and I have to pay duty on them. Its always been that way.

Cranfield
YP, These presents have been coming for about 28 years. Every couple of years I take the matter up with Customs and Excise and each time the answer is, that they are not "Duty Free". The "gift" allowance is quite low and you pay Duty on the difference between that and the value of the gift, as stated on the Customs Declaration. If anyone has found a way around it, the best of luck to them, I am just stating my own experience. It can be a nasty shock, when you add up the purchase price, shipping and Duty. What was a good deal, suddenly becomes quite expensive. Its one of the reasons I go over there twice a year and "No", I don,t take other peoples shopping lists. red_stag88
Plus they are trying to make it that if you have more than £150 of stuff when you come back from the states, you start having to spend import. Simply because the dollar is so cheap.
rjimmer
YP, These presents have been coming for about 28 years. Shows how long it is since I went abroad. My passport ran out in 1978. Only used it once before that!
Crecca
I have had things from the States with no duty. My son has bought loads of things Cabelas, ebay and private, only had to pay duty once! Crecca

Jonnyni
The added advantage with the extortionate 40% airmail is that you can track your packages from leaving cabela's to you door.
