TIDES EDGE
I have a very old Husqvarna 550xp chain saw it runs as good as the day I brought it 20 years ago but for some reason the chain becomes slack after 10 to 15 minutes work any one got any ideas please. wisdom
Is it oiling ok? How old is the chain?if it's getting hot or you are cutting very dry seasoned wood it may stretch. That's what I was told so I kept my chains sharp and ensured plenty of oil was feeding along the bar and chain.
bigroomboy
Either the above or its the bar studs /nuts. They are the only things that affect chain tension.
strimmer_13
When putting the chain on, put the saw in your crotch, bar (with chain on) resting on a log infront of you, so the weight of the engine makes the bar angle up slightly and tighten nuts up, with only enough room on the teeth to come off the bar. Often when the bar is straight, after a few cuts the bar settles into the 'upwards angle' and will put roughly 1/4'' slack on. I used to run mine slacker on purpose cross cutting but after upgrading saws to one's that have a lot of grunt, I've thrown a few chains and it aint nice. Funnily enough I'm being sensible after years and today I'm doing my medium felling licence 👍
SpringDon
All the above plus make sure the tension screw has not burst out. It’s unlikely to be an oiling problem as you notice a hot bar and burrs on the bottom of the bar first.
Brodie
Are you using decent quality chains? Cheap chains, like off the bay, can stretch and slack off very quickly.
figgy
Strimmer is right. I noticed on my husky the chain would go slack and the not setting the bar right on tensioning was the problem.
