Just dropped in for a quick look as I've been and am very busy at the moment but I couldn't let this one go by.

Seems like this thread has been hijacked before it’s even got off the ground although not entirely as I guess the two themes do go hand in hand.

Firstly pavman mentioned the ban on pigeon shooting in Denmark/Scandinavia a ban by any other name as I believe the shooting season has been curtailed to just one month (October) a year which is the main migration month so guess what...no pigeon shooting worth a damn. If you think your 'sport' is safe think again! And don’t take my word for it, ask the Danes, ask the Dutch, ask many of our ‘community’ partners what’s been done to their field sports activities. If you thought fox hunting was the end to our problems think again, we are under threat ALL of the time.

Now for all you a*******s who want to talk about a closed season for pigeon shooting. Shut the **** up it shouldn’t even be up for debate. Look if you have a conscience and personally don’t want to ‘pest control’ during the summer months then don’t but DO NOT talk about supporting a closed season. That’s very very dangerous ground. Pigeons are generally known to breed almost all year round as it is so when would you bring in a closed season and on the basis of ‘give an inch and you’ll lose a mile’ it’s a road to disaster. The greens and the antis are a problem enough for the field sports communities without shooters joining in on their side. NO CLOSED SEASON. NO TALK OF A CLOSED SEASON. NO DEBATE. NO QUARTER!

I’ll also say this, if I hear of any retailer who makes a living selling gear to the shooting sports industry talking of supporting a closed season I’ll make sure I never spend another dime with them and I’ll make it my business to get as many others to follow suit. Put them out of business and deservedly so if they can’t wholeheartedly support their customer base!

the most farcical idea of a closed season on pest species is what is the farmer supposed to do just sit there while they eat his livelihood. There is no place for a closed season to increase numbers just for shooters. The system works as it is its an unwritten rule that the open license is total bull**ks but there does need to be common sense applied. Now crops are in the ground pretty much all year round by the time you realise theres laid wheat still arround to mid september and straight after that rape is being drilled there is no time to give them a break. If the numbers are low its not worth going out shooting them so a balance is reached.

I understand Pigeon shooting has been restricted to one month a year (the month they migrate) due to the success of antis, anyone have any news

In Denmark the woodpigeon close season is from 31st January until 30th September so the locals have four months in which to shoot pigeons, but sadly during this time there are very few pigeons as they are usually on a mission to the UK and Europe.

That is why the Danish hunters come in droves to the UK in spring and summer, I think most of the guides accommodate them.

That's Official.

I think John D and Roland P should consider emigrating to that part of Scandinavia, where they can retire in perfect harmony with nature as the antis intended.
