.410 Slug rounds

Recommended Posts

I would like to get permision for this due to close range fox problems outside our house.

They are causing problems with our chickens, and due to nearby reisdents, 12g would be too noisy. A telescopic sight equiped rifle would be unsuitable due to close ranges involved, do you think I have a chance at applying for shotgun .410 slug rounds for this purpose? I currently own a .222 centerfire, .22lr and a shotgun on seperate certificate.

I wouldnt need an FAC .410 shotgun, just something simple to do the job quietly and safely.

Cheers

Slugs.........AAA........ close range :good:

What range are we talking ? Also is the .410 silenced as the report will still be bloody loud if not as loud, to any bystanders, as the 12.

If the range is around 15-25 yards a heavy 12 bore load of 3`s will be fine. Another thing to remember is there will only be 20 pellets in a 16gm load of AAA`s

if houses are the problem then a live capture trap is the best option. With a slug you just won't know quite where it will end up unless you have a very good backdrop. To me it wouldn't be safe and rather than slugs if a shotgun is an option at close range you would be better off with somthing between no 1 and no 3 but you would need to be very close

I'd build some kind of makeshift backstop and bait the fox in front of it. Once he's confident, shoot him with the rimmy if you have it on your cert. Failing that just let him have a barrel of BB from your 12g, it's only one shot so unlikely to cause too many problems with the neighbours as long as it's not at 2AM

Al4x (dear friend) Don't knock till you try. A 3" .410 with AAA is devastating! With the tall shot column you often get 'balling' or cold welding of the pellets; result, instant slugs and flyers!

In 1962, I shot a running hare at 62 yards (paced) with a 65mm Eley Fourlong .410 with No. 5 shot from a Webley bolt action. The hare had a hole in it you could push a pencil through!

No offence, but why in the name of god would you attempt such a shot in the first place?

Fair enough, I think we've all been there, but it sounded more like advice than an anecdotal case. Dont think this would be a proper course of action ever, unless you want to chase a wounded shrieking hare across the fields. Please remember that you are posting to someone who is asking for advice, who may take your post as gospel that it is ok to fire at anything with a .410 at more than extreme range.
