Yellow Bear
Newcastle peak this time what are the others like ? And they still say the young and hospitality industry are not to blame for the rises😵 Coronavirus: Another 1,600 Newcastle students test positive https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-54468127
Scully
Have just tried to contact son who is at Northumbria Uni’, the one with the highest positive cases in Newcastle. He’s just come out of two weeks isolation after testing negative, but had no choice but to stay indoors with three others whom had all tested positive. Im assuming he will need to be tested again now, but in the meantime some of the lecturers are considering strike action. My opinion is he may as well come home if what few lectures they have are online. He could go back to work and have the best part of 9.5k reimbursed. This is exactly what the uni’s and landlords don’t want of course, they want money.

What is the logic of locking people down together and then when found to be not carrying they have to stay and then as you say, presumably get tested and locked down awaiting the results. Potentially that could go on for a long time.  Not sure what strike action will achieve other than shutting down individual universities.  My youngest is off to Lincoln University tomorrow, I hope things get sorted soon. Scully
He returned my call about ten minutes ago. He feels fine and can now go to the gym, the uni’ library but a ‘practical’ tutorial he had planned for tomorrow has now been cancelled and will be done online. How that’s supposed to work is anyone’s guess. He requires placements to accrue points but no one is keen to offer placements for obvious reasons. Officialdom is simply desperate to keep students there, again for obvious reasons. It’s my lads third year, so he’s an old hand now, but any newbies just aren’t going to have that freshers experience, and that’s a shame. He admits he may as well be back home, cos the uni’ experience simply isn’t happening.
TIGHTCHOKE
A large part of my sons course should be based around placements, how it will work out is anyone's guess! Â It really is a damned shame that this is all being so poorly thought out.

An interesting point on the news tonight, Knowsley is higher than everywhere else I think but doesn't have a student population like Manchester or Newcastle, when the mayor was asked why he simply said they don't know!! TIGHTCHOKE
We did consider asking for a deferment, but have no idea when this will all end!
markm
Vast majority of students will be from outside the city and also a significant number of BAME students come to Newcastle to study and why not....... it’s a great place.  Newcastle is popular out to 20 mile circumference due to easy access, quite a big party city, and wasn’t really effected by the first wave.  Basically zero ‘hurd immunity’  Put all this together and it’s basically a cocktail for covid.  It will move on and it looks like Nottingham is next.  Edited October 8, 2020 by markm
