Cheers I have a Garmin but I hardly use it now. I just use my phone with a Memory Map Platinum subscription, £40 a year for the whole of the UK in both Landranger and Explorer scales as well as road and street maps. Dead easy to plan a route on my computer and upload it to the phone. Much easier than the Garmin.
Centrepin
I just have Ordnance Survey app, about £20 a year, landranger, explorer, road maps, airiel photos. 1st class.
Raja Clavata
Another vote for OSMaps with offline maps - even if you can't get a mobile signal you'll know exactly where you are. If you're going off the beaten track then OS Locate is a handy utility too, just in case.

Yes, but if you want them in paper they're i think £6 each. £8 if waterproofed. I only buy the ones in paper I use the most as I actually enjoy a paper map. The online versions are updated continually though. If you get a new phone you just reinstall the app and re log in. You can only be logged in on one device at a time I think. If you're not sure, they usually do a free 7 day full access trial, which is more than enough time to explore it or even dare I say, download the maps you need and keep them off line 😉 For the £20 odd quid it costs per year its superb. Just an example of what's available

figgy
I had a Garmin e trex something number, a good one. It would lay a electronic breadcrumb trail so you could return by exactly the same route. Could load whatever walk data you wanted. But modern mobiles can do virtually everything a handheld can do.
