Raja Clavata
Regarding Africa: The first COVID death in Kenya was a Director of GIBB Engineering Ltd. The family are middle class by any standards with a home in Nairobi and a farm / estate in their home village. The victim passed after several days in ICU at Aga Khan hospital, his executive healthcare insurance plan did not cover COVID and the family received a hospital bill of ~£9k. He might have been the first officially recorded covid death, that made it to a hospital but I doubt he was the first. And I doubt a lot would have 9k to pay for medical costs Is all health care private in that part of Africa?
Fisheruk
I have visited Kenya and have travelled widely throughout. There is no real free healthcare in Kenya, a few mission hospitals may not charge, but you pay for everything. Most people will not go to a hospital if they get sick, because they can’t afford it. It use to be the practice that you were forcibly kept in hospital until you paid your bill for medical care, but this was ruled illegal relatively recently in 2015, I think. The only way anyone will know how many have been affected by CV in places like Kenya, will be by studying the excess death figures in the future. The current death rate is just over 10 per 1000. Life expectancy is about 60 years. People moan about our NHS, but most have no idea how blessed we are in the UK.

It was all over the news there and got a bit messy with the government initially refusing to release the body to the family. The family are Luhya and there are strict rules and rituals concerning the way funerals of elders are conducted. I'm not sure why you doubt he was the first but that's secondary and does not require further discussion. 1 hour ago, Fisheruk said: I have visited Kenya and have travelled widely throughout. There is, or at least was, only 256 ventilators in the entire country too. It was ruled illegal but is still common practice outside of Nairobi to hold people until they pay the bill. Jaymo
Not read all of this thread, but search YouTube for Clarkson summary of the news headlines regarding his ‘deaths door’ covid experience.
