Medic1281
Our mowers used to run on gear oil, that was a lot thicker EP90 I think. Not sure what your gearbox should take. What make/model is the topper?
enfieldspares
I'd go online and see if still possible what the machine's manufacturer advises. My own thoughts are that 10-30 is too thin and you need an 80-90. Edited June 13, 2021 by enfieldspares
bluesj
It would be better than nothing but i would go and get some gear oil as motor oil is not sticky enough and the gears will wear more

oneshot1979
EP 80/90. Straight EP 90. Or if your box is leaking a little go with some 00EP grease, same stuff you squirt in the front swivels of land rovers. Most motor factors sell it in one shot tubes so you don't have to buy a drum. amateur
There is a wonderful story in Harry Weslake's biography "Lucky all my Life" where, when he had been taken out on a fishing boat, the crew discovered that the engine "lubo" had dropped dangerously low and the engine was at risk of seizure and, of course, they had forgotten to bring spare oil. They topped it up with paraffin, which seemed to have no ill effects and brought them back to land. Quantity rather than quality!
