Ruining a lovely little gun II

Bought my son a lovely and very light .410” gun after much searching. The stock was short, but nowhere near short enough!

My eldest requires a 10.5” LOP

Which means quite a bit off the stock.

Like on my other .410” I knew the Prince of Wales half pistol grip would need to come off, and so it did.

Bit of rasping, filing then sanding and the line is ok.

Needs to be stripped and refinished.

Fit is almost ok. Maybe just a smidgen long. Will put some lead weight in to the stock for balance and then a thin butt pad.

Already completed a similar project on my Hushpower .410”. Both predrilled for stock to be reassembled.

The gun was quite nose heavy with the tiny stock. I hollowed out the butt and filled with a mixture of lead shot and adhesive, probably about 2.5oz. I also took 3” off the barrel too, down to just above the Section 2 minimum. It is still a little long and a little heavy for him but the balance is bang on the hinge pin and he can grow into it from here. I put it next to my 30” Beretta for comparison. The stock needs oiling, as he grows a butt plate will be added then sections of the original stock threaded back onto the guides.

When your lad grows out of it

He has two younger brothers, by the time the three of them are finished with it it will have a well deserved retirement! We have a full length hushpower .410” which is great but barrel heavy, it’s what my son shot his first woodpigeon and crow with in the summer. This .410” will be good for shooting balloons and squirrels. As TC says, in a couple of years when my eldest passes this on he will be onto a 20 bore - probably a second hand youth stock Yilditz etc.

You'll certainly be getting your moneys worth out of it 👍

Well I was in Broughton Astley Guns in Leicestershire on Thursday and saw, and bought, two boxes of Lyalvale Express 2" .410" loaded with nine grams of English #9 and fibre wad and biodegradable obturator disc. Ideal cartridges (on clay pigeons and/or squirrels) from Lyalvale for your gun and your lad I'd think?
