countryman
I have brought one of my old favourite air rifles the Webley FX2000, it’s just had a full service and is as good as I remember them. The stock has a few small marks on it showing up white, I have walnut oiled the stock which has brought it up very nice but I can’t hide the little white marks on the stock, any suggestions what I can use on it, I don’t want to strip the stock it’s to good in its original finish. Thanks Chris

I don’t know what this white is under the top layer, it’s an original finish I am sure, the walnut oil does not soak into it.
CaptC
Probably a polyurethane finish - the white marks are caused by the surface being scratched. No amount of oil will get rid of the marks. You might try an artists paintbrush going over the marks with polyurethane - matt or gloss depending on the original finish
Scully
It’s possibly been covered in shellac at some point, and if so the blooms are caused by moisture getting in little parts of the grain the shellac hasn’t covered. Just rub it back and touch up with a wood dye or acrylic paint. Just a guess.

ditchman
bear in mind shellac............shellac will disolve in methalyted spirits......thats what i use when i dissolve shellac flakes.........if it is shellac maybe a rub over with meths soaked rag...... much more likly as capt'c says poly finish....it has "bloomed " and needs stripping off ? JohnfromUK
I suspect it is a polyurethane (varnish) type finish. Small nicks, scratches and chips let the water in and it 'blooms'. It is really where the varnish has lifted from the wood due to water ingress I think. I had a Beretta with that finish and the same problem. I had it stripped off and refinished with an oil finish. Depending on how far you want to go, you would probably need to crisp up the chequering afterwards. It is a DIY proposition and there are numerous threads on re-finishing a stock once you have all the old varnish off. Like many things, oil finishing wood and how good a finish you achieve is all in the 'preparation' and a really good job will involve many hours work. That may or may not be something you would like to do.
TIGHTCHOKE
I suspect it is just a piece of beech or something similar!
