TIGHTCHOKE
If they have found accelerant at the scene, not sure how they will proceed to a prosecution? Building NOT listed, owner allegedly sets it ablaze. They gained permission to demolish everything above ground floor and it MIGHT have gone wrong! Move along, NOTHING to see here! JohnfromUK
UPDATE: It seems the digger is known (from BBC website) The owner of a hire firm that supplied the excavator used to demolish the pub said he had done nothing wrong. Speaking to Construction News Lyndon Thomas said the firm had delivered the self-drive machinery a week and a half ago. "We just hire a digger to a customer. I can't be responsible for what they do with the machinery," he said. TIGHTCHOKE
It really is a complete NON story. Run down drinking hole, known more for its subsidence due to historical mining than its beer or ambiance.

That's one view. The other is; "Well known landmark for which the listing building status has been applied for - decision pending" May not (or may) be illegal, but you can see why it raises concerns. Sorry, but I would rather have the Police dealing with muggings, rape, stabbings and all the other stuff they seem very good at avoiding. I agree, but I can understand the locals being upset. There also seems to be animosity between the new owners and most people local to their businesses. Many years (mid 1960s I think) ago it happened round here; large historic country house, listing applied for, builder moved in, ripped out anything architecturally 'saleable' and flattened the rest. Many locals were very upset as it would (apparently) have been listed Grade 1.

I am mighty surprised that the Council are getting involved, I would almost bet good money that they wanted it torn down due to the poor state of the foundations. Scully
Local developer flattened a house which contained pipistrelle bats, claiming he’d ‘forgotten’. Went to court and received a slapped wrist, paid the fine then developed the land. 🤷♂️😀
