Windscreen repair.

I think Autoglass used to quick and easy and remarkably cheap resin fixes. I used to get them to come to work and sort a screen out for about £10.

I guess the ACCOUNTANTs have taken over.

I can't remember what estate I had at the time but I was parked down the marsh and when I came back the boot screen was shattered , no one was down there and the only thing that might had done it was a bottle of water in the boot and it was a very hot day , still whatever done it I had a windscreen that needed replacing urgently , not far away we had a car breakers yard and yes you have guessed right they had one exactly the same as mine , popped over and asked the chap how much ? , a tenner and if you want me to fit in then £20 all in , so the deal was done , he tapped all the small bits of glass out of my old one and hovered it up ,he then got a piece of string and put it in the rubber beading , stuck my ( new ) window in and then pulled the string and the edge of the rubber came out onto the glass , brilliant job and it was still in when I exchanged my motor a couple of years or so later , no doubt the new screens have come a long way and whoever fit them will need a bit more gear than a length of thin string

Yes indeed, a laptop computer is required to accommodate the re connection of all of the built in sensors.🙄

Stone-chips this time of year are a hazard due to Local Councils 'tar-spraying & chipping' road surfaces as a cheap means of given a bit more life to the road (leastways around here)...........

The signs say '20pmh max' but few adhere, even if they do a granite chip held in the tread will get thrown out and chip a passing or behind car at some point.

I've been caught a few times - worst = new screen; 2 others repaired - 1 was invisible (Autoglass on insurance, paid excess) and the other shows (chum running a garage).

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I thought that I’d give my thoughts on Autoglass.

I had a small stone chip on my windscreen. Went online to Autoglass and was told to state a time when it was convenient for them to ring me the next morning. Stated a time and no such call.

Preferring to speak to someone in person, I went to my nearest Autoglass place which was in a Morrisons car park. The person in charge said that I’d have to ring their number and book an appointment. Actually got to speak to a real person who gave me an approximate quote of £265 but would ring me back at 3pm to confirm. No call ensued.

Then decided to try my local Halfords to see whether they did windscreen repairs. Young lad (well young to me, but knew his stuff) came out, said “Yes, that’s repairable, will be £40 and can do it in 15 minutes time and will take 30 minutes to do”.

The Halfords guy did say that many folk don’t realise that they do windscreens and used exactly the same equipment as Autoglass but for a fraction of the price.

The job was done well within the time and is completely invisible so I’m well pleased.

Now I know many on here have slagged off Halfords in the past but I’ve always found them (my local one anyway) brilliant to deal with. Only wished that I’d realised they do windscreen repairs, I would have gone to them in the first place and saved myself much time and hassle.

As for Autoglass, absolute shambles, in my opinion.

Bit of an update of my dealings with Autoglass.

I had a call yesterday from a lady from Autoglass asking whether I was happy with the service that I received from them. My reply was very polite but I left her in no doubt that they were a complete shambles, extortionately expensive and why anyone should use them was completely beyond me.

She then said “So will you be recommending us in the future then?”

What part of ‘stick it up your back passage’ did she not understand 😂.

I really don’t envy her job as a customer relations person working for Autoglass.

By coincidence, after avoiding any windscreen troubles for around 15 years, mine got hit by something (presumed a stone) which caused a chip around 1/2" in diameter total (i.e. including the small 'star' cracks, less than 1/2") and low down near the centre of the screen where the 'view through the chip' only saw the bonnet surface, not the road ahead.

Since I didn't want it to spread, I followed the instructions from my insurer and called National Windscreens.  Arranged appointment and technician called this week.  No problems, all done, nothing to pay and chip now pretty much invisible.  Pleased and a good service - on time, helpful technician, all done on my drive.  Nothing to pay by me at all - just sign the 'job done' note and all handled by insurance.
