I took your advice and was glad I did!

After  my last (less-than-optimistic) post several people suggested I should give it a try anyway. I thought about it and decided that I might regret it if I didn't. I could watch TV, with the left-wing media try to hide their disappointment that Trump survived the attack, then there was the hysteria building up before some soccer match or I could go out to watch the harvested rape field. I might as well watch it  from a hide as from the truck. Being stubble I can drive on the field so the set up is easy and it's not cold, like the winter shooting I'm used to, so go for it.

Got there, about 50-60 birds in one corner of the 50-acre field so I set up near that corner, nice line of trees, the breeze and the sun on back, also a nice popular wood not far away that way. For half an hour I saw more 737's heading for Stanstead than I saw pigeons, neither planes nor birds showed any interest in the field or my decoys. I feared a blank. Some of the birds began to  trickle back, not to my corner but over the brow of the field, when I walked them off about 40 had built up. When they trickled back again, they looked at the same far side, saw no birds there and drifted away, disappointed. I was really worried by now!

About now, a tiny drip drip of pairs and singles started to come by, many of them decoyed and I broke the blank! This kept going for a few hours and by 3 hours I had reached my double figures! It dropped off after that and I ended with 12 for the whole afternoon.

However, we were both right - my judgement on what was likely to happen wasn't far wrong and you Gents were also right, I had a nice afternoon, thanks for the encouragement!! Got home quite pleased, only to see JDog had outdone me in no time at all. Well done that man!

By the way, those of you who thought that chaff wouldn't cover the seed in places, take a look at this:

You can only watch, get in the right place and shoot what’s there…..if that’s a low number then so be it!
I usually get some good bags on the first rape stubble to be cut, surprised there’s not more on it but then again may not be many in the area.

You mustn't purely judge the day on the numbers shot , if you enjoyed sitting about in the countryside with very little work involved then so be it , if you get a few then it's better still , it don't really matter what others get as they might have a lot more Pigeon's then you have got , take Mr JDog , he got 18 in a short period today without decoys , well round here at the moment you would be here till England are in another final on foreign soil and that is a long while to wait .

I have done a fair bit of wildfowling in my time and blanks are part of the package , if you get despondent  by not having a shot let alone filling your bag up then you wouldn't be into wildfowling very long , to get a dozen in an afternoon on the marsh would be a Red letter day and even if you ended up with 2 or 3 then you would go home happy . so just keep plugging away and you will drop on a good day , remember , you have to be in it to win it , and you won't win it by sitting at home watching day time television . GOOD LUCK  MM
