Water And Sewage Charges ?

MM, you said above that you will turn your stop tap off,,,, DON'T ! The method is to make sure you have no running water in your house, ie washing machine, tumble dryer etc. Then check the meter for flow, which can only be between the meter and your house. If there is a leak, it will show as the meter will be ticking over, where ordinarily it wouldn't. Hope that's clear ?

To add to this,,,, when you check the meter using the above method and it is ticking over, then you can turn off your internal stopcock [under kitchen sink ?] and check the meter again. If it's still ticking over, the leak, if any, is in the obvious run of pipework.

Good morning ... No , I looked in the meter chamber yesterday and the meter was a good 30 inches down and bone dry , I am waiting for my next door neighbour to come home from a few days away to read the meter as his eyes are better than mine and I will turn my stop tap off for a hour or so to see if the meter is still going around , :good:

Morning Dave , I might have been my own worst enemy , it took me ages to reset up all my direct debits after I lost my wife , there was always enough money in the bank to cover them so we just got on with life , this was the same when I finally got them all sorted by myself , I put my state pension into the account that pay the bills and that have been more than enough for the last nine months , I only noticed the big amount  from the water company as they now combine the water and sewage together , I will now be glad when the water company find out what the problem is as this is a worry I could do without . :good:

Marsh man, you do NOT  turn off the stopcock either at the meter or inside the house, you simply read the meter including the red(fractions) digits, then use no water whatsoever for a few hours and later read it again. It should not have moved obviously- if it has there is either a faulty meter,or a leak somewhere.

Many THANKS for all your helpful advise and it make perfect sense in making sure no water is being used in the house before checking the readings and then repeat checking the readings a couple of hours later , if a different reading then turn my internal stop tap off ( in the bathroom ) to see if the problem is from the meter to my stop tap , or if the readings stay the same then the problem might be inside my house which I don't think it is as a time served plumber have done any work required , still you never know .

I have took the measurement from the water meter to roughly my stop tap and it is about 38 feet , if there was a leak is there any devise in tracing it as it run under a brick weave driveway ? the meter is just near the concrete post with the reflector on and the water pipe would go at an angle to the right hand side near my bathroom window .:hmm:

The water company should have equipment to check for underground leaks, but it’s unlikely, because the huge amounts of water the meter is showing would cause it to appear on the surface I would think. My guess is either the meter is faulty,or being read wrongly,or somehow the meter is feeding more than just your bungalow. It should be sorted out asap and you should be refunded a great deal of money for the time this has been going on!

John, if you cannot read the meter, take a picture with your phone and blow the image up to get a reading.

I tried that with a friend’s meter which was difficult to see with small numbers, but the phone image simply blurred,I found a magnifying glass the best way!

I do hope you are right , but as you rightly say it do need sorting out one way or another as soon as possible . :good:

I did try what T C advised and I even cleaned the glass with a new paint brush on a stick , I used my camera and it was most likely to dark as the flash came on but you couldn't read the big numbers let alone the small ones , I have got a magnifying glass so if it is a bright day tomorrow I will give that a try as today is very dull .

@marsh man hope you solve what the issue is very soon, at least so you'll know what you're up against. If I was closer [yes, that old chestnut 😆] I wouldn't hesitate to pop round to assist 😉

Yes I think a few of us would offer to help if we were only just up the road.

P / W have got some superb members , we all like a little larf now and again to lift our sprits, but when serious help is needed you can always rely on the help given , pity the road is so long as you know you will be fed and watered and if stuck on the food front I know I could rely on my fellow countryman ditchie to lay out an international spread .:drinks:

Hello, Was it a TWA employee or contractor ?? I do not know on TWA Kent area but in South Oxfordshire most of the Leak repairs and Meter fitting was put out to contractors, Depots closed and people made redundant,

A fictional story? ? ?

Thatcher started the demolition of council run services on the mythical basis of competition improving productivity? blah, blah, blah?  The real reason of course was to extract any so called profit from local authorities (rate payers) and give it to her mates/sponsors.

How in the name of common sense can there be any profit generated from local amenities/ services?

Anyway, my experiences sadly showed that outside and retained service providers initially were by and large equally as untruthful in their attempts to gain the authorities money.

Today, it's possibly much worse for the rate payers, as due to some unfathomable reason (cost, ease, idleness and lack of care?) the push was to let the outside contractor take over the control of the issue of works etc. (Cheaper, easier and able to deflect blame?)

Councils now seem to revel in the ability to be useless by having many avenues usable for complaints?

A win, win, win for everyone except the rate payers (customers)?

Just another costly illustration of our irreversible demise?

hello, Cowboy plumbers !!!!!

As far as I know, it is TW's responsibility and 'fixed' by their 'contractors'. Three times this happened, within a few months and it's leaking massively again. So much so, it has washed away a large amount of the sub-base beneath the concrete floor !

The boss is in dispute with TW,,,,, just this one small job is costing a fortune,,,, times that by X amount = £????? No wonder they are in trouble 🤦‍♂️

It's all down to the boss. He's after a claim or payment from TW, plus of course a rebate for his water bill. TBH, the workmanship that I exposed is appalling !!!

Bearing in kind I carry out insurance repairs etc daily, so have seen this as part of claims that I get sent to. This is quite tame actually, but the boss is after ££££'s 🙄😂
