Shambam1962
I made a Zebra wood pen yesterday for Marsh Man and whilst in the shed I prepped a few wooden pen blanks for turning today. I really enjoy making the wooden pens and they are very easy and straightforward to make. The turning part is the easy bit, but the drilling of the blacks to accept the brass tubes is a bit time consuming. The zebra wood pens look really nice once sanded and sealed and polished. Each zebra wood pen is different and unique. Marsh Man’s pen is fitted with an antique gold pen kit and looks very nice completed. The wood blanks in the photo is Ash, Zebra wood, Indian Rosewood,Zebra wood and the 5th pen in the photo is Black Walnut.

Shambam1962
I received a wood order delivery yesterday for some upcoming projects, and amongst the pieces, I had ordered 2 pieces of WENGE wood to try out on a few pens. I haven’t used WENGE before, and read up on it, and the wood dust isn’t too good for you if inhaled. It also said it is difficult to work with, as it blunts chisels, and the chisels must be kept sharp whilst turning the wood. I opted for my carbide tipped chisel and the wood was very easy to turn, and didn’t encounter any problems, and I’m very pleased with how it turned out 👍 After making the Wenge pen, I had been looking into turning an antler tine into a pen. I selected a straight piece of antler tine, and drilled and glued the brass tube inside, before turning. It was straightforward to turn, and looks okay, but I’m not 100% happy with it, and will do better with the next attempt.

L Thanks Loki 👍 The antler was nice to turn, but the grey started to show through, as it got nearer to the pen size, and had to leave it, up on size as the photo. I know it’s a natural material, but it spoiled the look of the pen I had planned.
Shambam1962
I was kindly sent 2 pieces of Bog Oak today by PW member johnphillip, and it is a very nice dark colouring. I wanted to see how it looks , and decided to cut a few blanks on the bandsaw, and drilled and fitted the brass tubes inside to fit on the pen mandrel. It was very nice to turn, and sanded and sealed, before applying the finish. I fitted the blanks with an antique gold pen kit, which is more of a bronze colour, and the pen looks very nice once polished. I will cut the rest of the wood pieces up into pen blank sizes, and look forward to making a few more of this type of pens in the future. Thanks again to johnphillip for his help, and kindness, and taking the time to send me the pieces in the post 👍👍

Shambam1962
I received a different style pen kit yesterday which I ordered a few days ago. It’s a bit different to my usual pen kits, but I made a few completed pen this morning to try out the kits. The kits are a starter style kit and don’t have the Parker style ink refill as my previous pens, but are very nice to make and I’m quite pleased with them. The pens in the photos are made from Wenge, Zebrano and Ash. The Ash pen I played around with by scorching with a blowtorch and then lightly sanded, before applying the finish, and is different 👍

Cheers Dave👍 Ash is a lovely wood to work with, but it is a bit white, and does change colour with age. I thought I would try something different and scorch the ends of the wood, and still unsure if it suits the pen 🙄
