paul65
I can't stand stand country cowboy kicking **** but he's done a couple of good songs. You could say that. I'd say that he was hugely talented and one of the giants of 20th century popular music.
lurcherboy
I'm a big fan of both versions Got the man in black in my genetic make up as the old fella was a big fan and discovered NIN a good few years ago around the time M Manson started to make a noise. Floating Chamber
And soulful. No, manufactured. How so? False, nauseating, unnatural, contrived, cheesy. But then I like Ruby Murray.

paul65
And soulful. No, manufactured. How so? False, nauseating, unnatural, contrived, cheesy. But then I like Ruby Murray. Funny that. Johnny Cash's voice is none of the things you list and Ruby Murray's is most of them. As Johnny Cash's singing voice is very much like his speaking voice, it can't really be described as false, contrived or unnatural.

I don't know how she got away with it, the same as JC I suppose. Some like him others don't.
Chard
I like some country music, as long as it's not too "Nashvillized", but I've never really taken to JC. My Mother used to think he was a wonderful singer, but didn't do it for me. I thought he was a bit of a tortured soul/drama queen, in the same way that Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond are, always wittering on about how life was a biatch and other self-flagellating **** :good: I thought Walk The Line was a watchable film though, but it didn't make me sympathise with him, I just saw him as a wife-beating pisshead junkie I went off him a bit when he was sucking up to all the rapists and murderers in his San Quentin phase Now that was nauseating

Oi, whats wrong with Ruby Murray - whenever my dad heard her songs he went all misty eyed Well, it was either her voice or the the fact that he had got to the bottom of the whisky bottle  Don
gibby
I was fortunate to be blasted with his stuff from a young age. Love the cover he did of it. Another favourite is of course Ring of Fire, but I Hung my Head has to be up there to, give it a listen. I Hung My Head Gibby

Floating Chamber
I once had 'Ring of Fire' but the doctor said it was caused by over zealous use of rough Czech toilet paper; the cream soon put it right.
Blackpowder
I am not a great fan of country music but quite fond of some of Cash's tracks. Folsom Prison Blues and Ring of Fire spring to mind. For American music Bluegrass and Cajean plus a bit of Trad Jazz grabs my attention.
