After the Merchant Navy (up on top getting a sun tan rather than swimming in hot oil all day) then nearly 20 years as a ship broker (in tankers) I decided to work for me doing something I really wanted to, when I wanted.....................I run a shooting school which also offers gun dog training and a web design company.

As usual the only problems are some of the customers and trying to make enough to feed the dogs and the OH

Time served plumber with a real old fashioned firm, where I spent twenty years. Got the sea angling bug very badly and fitted out an IP 23 to take angling parties. Went on to a larger boat for potting and angling with a crew/partner. Left that 15 years ago to return to being a plumber self employed one man band. Any forum members out there who are thinking of making the move I highly reccomend it. Plenty hassel and unpaid book keeping but you can take time of when conditions are right for any country pursuit, be it decoying salmon angling or whatever takes your fancy. The financial rewards are excellent but always keep a wary eye open for dodgy customers who have no intention of paying. The best sounding offers of work are not necisarrily so.

BBC Radio News Editor with World Service now working as at BBC College of Journalism training hacks in how to cover breaking news, media law and writing skills. Specialist on African politics and wars.

About to get redundancy (I hope) and go into training consultancy and have more time to shoot.

No way I've done 28 years with no time off for good behaviour. Loved it when I was a radio docuemtary maker and news editor running live news programmes but it's now all soooooo bureaucratic.

I'm viewed as a total weirdo at work cos of shooting and playing rugby. BBC is run by people who are so scared of the newspapers they daren't **** for fear it will be in the Mail, spend all their time in meetings or schmoozing in wine bars and are obsessed with ratings rather than getting the story right.

It's not full of people who are left-wing but people whether labour, conservative or lib dem who are tied up with being self-important, elitist but pretending to be at the grassroots (so you have to pretend to support a football team like Millwall, Arsenal or Grimsby to get on), and so trendy that they have no contact with any form of life other than their own little circles of media luvvies....I could go on for hours.

So I'm outta there as soon as they'll give me my redundancy cheque!
