Well, having had Norton AV installed on my pc for 2 years, I let my subcription run out yesterday because I didn't fancy paying the forty quid to renew it as I dont think there great anyway. So now I quickly need to get myself sorted with some protection and was wandering if you guys can recommend something which will take care of all my computer protection needs. I do a fair bit of online shopping so I need something that will keep my details safe when doing so. I dont mind paying if I have to, but obviously if theres something out there that I can get for free then all the better :good: cheers

I added that AVG to my computer and it made it incredibly slow. Does anyone know why this happened?

All AV programs will have a performance impact on the PC they run on. Depending on how you configure it, this can be more or less intrusive.

Generally speaking the faster the machine in the first place (not just CPU speed but disk subsystem, type speed and amount of RAM) the impact will be perceived to be less. For the same work both a high end and a low end PC will do the same stuff, the slower one will struggle more and appear to be having problems.

Most AV programs add themselves to your system at a low level, every disk access and memory access as well as every time you download a new file, copy one from CD or anything like that, they are working to scan the files and spot patterns or signatures which would indicate something nasty.

I'd recommend leaving the settings alone unless you know what you are doing, though automatically scanning archives on use on a slow machine will cripple it - let it check the file after you decompress it or as you decompress it otherwise the AV program does it once to look inside the archive then you do it again to extract the files.

I've tried both AVG and Avast. Of the two Avast seems for more reliable and doesn't slowdown my computer like AVG did. AVG also have the annoying habit of completely changing their software necessitating uninstalling the old version and installing the new version. Avast can update by as many as four times a day and any updates to the program and the virus database are done automatically.I install Avast on the computers I manitain and I just haven't had any calls for help since I dis over a year ago. With AVG, well that was a completely different matter :good:

Thanks for all the replies so far guys. I knew I could rely on you. One more question however as I am about as much use as a chocolate teapot when it comes to this sort of thing. Will I have to wipe off the norton related stuff from my pc before I can introduce a new AV software? and if so, then how do I go about doing this? Thanks very much :good:

I don't work with desktops or Windows for that matter but I have probably un-shagged hundreds of PC's after Norton broke them. I think it's a cheek they are still allowed to use Peter's name, he was a great programmer and made some great stuff, nothing like this overzealous example of how not to do it.

It's odd, the corporate AV offering from them isn't half bad.
