A Fox and a Deer!

Took both my rifles to check the zero,s after getting a new baffle section for the .243 mod...both ok

Whilst there i waited for dusk and had a call..nothing showing so went for a walk(snow down so looking for tracks) ending up on the bales.Spotted an Owl on a fence post with the NV in the next field.Whilst watching this,i see a fox crossing the field, carefully place the NV and start down the bales(3 high) to get the rifle.1 step and 1 bounce off my *** and i,m down  that was quick

Anyway back up,fox is coming down the fenceline to the gates. It comes through and i,m set up watching. It,s 140yds to the gate and their is a midden heap there thats a favourite and true to form it walks onto it and keeps walking,so i think, soon as you step off your getting an OI!...it steps off into the wood and re-appears over 200yds down the field

I let it go and head round to the farm and into the barn to watch the bait tree as this is just down the valley(we had 5 different fox on this farm show last week and got a shot at none of them),nothing shows  EH? but we lamp a fox on the fell from the farmyard at 9ish(he,s here regular) so swap for the .243 and we head off with the lamp....only time we get the x on him,he,s on the crest of a hill peeping out from behind a winnie bush  so thats 2 in the scopes and no shot again :/

Last night i,m on the bales early,i have a pheasant carcass out and the fox-pro.I wait till 7-10(it showed at 6-55 the night before) then try some calls.

At 7-40 i see 1 making it,s way up the field this time,so i attach the NV and wait and wait...no show so i txt the farmer to say i won,t be over(was gonna ambush the 9 o clock fox) as i,m waiting for this 1.

I give up at 8-40 and collect the caller, decide to walk the long way back to the motor and check some fields when i get a txt from the farmer to say he was watching 2 foxes at the bait tree...Dog and Vixen  typical,so i rush over and it starts to rain.Thats when the vixen picked up the bait and headed into the wood, followed by hubby :good:

We lowered the Fox-pro caller out of the window on some string and played a few ,and low and behold 15 mins later we have a fox heading straight for the tree.

Now this was probably a different 1 as it was on edge with it,s tail and hackles up,scenting, marking and generally strutting about acting tough...not impressed, have you met fed 55-no-quick squeak,he stops and nonchalantly looks around, crack thump - now you have..couldn,t believe how cocky he was B)

Nothing else showed by 11 which also made us think this was a different fox,so called it a night.

I cancelled stalking this morn as i,ve had 2 late nights after the the fox and an unsucessful early stalk yesterday morn.Unfortunately i didn,t change the alarm and that little click a clock makes when the hand passes was enough to wake me at 7.As much as i tried i couldn,t get back to sleep so at 8 05 i txt my mate who,s already in the wood, arrange to stalk towards each other(it,s a steep valley and we agree to only shoot up the banks when at the bottom).

I park in the farmyard, wave to the farmer and set off into the wood.About 300yds into my stalk,i spot a deer, quick glass confirms an anal tush.Down on the sticks, trigger set, safety off and wait...shot presents itself and crack thump,1 nice yearling Doe at 60yds :D Pretty easy this stalking lark :good: i wish!!

Had some for tea and we shared the rest with some of the farmers,so everyones happy

Bloody great read that jeff  That fox-pro caller is starting to earn its keep :D

I was out myself last night with the scope light i got one big dog fox at 60yrds a head shot it came in very wary looking for the source of the hare distress call that i had turned off about 3-4mins previous i hung around writing a text message on the phone then flicked the lamp around and there he was coming in as if the call was still playing :good: one 55gr v-max later ended his search :good: he must have came a long way.

Cheers all, :good:

After all the bickering of late,i thought it was time to get back to the shooting which we all do agree on :D

Patience often pays off Mark..i always give it at least 15 mins after a call before moving on....might just bring the Fox-pro over to make you spend some more cash..if you,ve any left..nice gun by the way :good::huh::lol:

That's definitely a two thumbs up :D:lol:

Its amazing how bold and brash a dog fox gets in January.

Haven't been out yet this month due to our beautiful weather among other things (like trying to get planning permission  )

I swear to god they actually discriminate (spelling?) against townsfolk in the Clare planning office. I dream of a lovely country home, can afford one too, but getting planning has about the same odds as playing the bloody lotto
