New diesel car

I have just had to fork out the thick end of £500 to get my 52 plate Mondeo TDCI back on the road (new injector ). I have had fords for the last few years and fancy a change. I am after a family sized car, needs to be a hatch back or estate and would prefer a diesel that puts out over 130bhp.

Looking to spend about 8k, any reccomendations ?

Audi A4 1.9 TDI - have to be 2nd hand at that price. Just had the first problem with mine (water pump) from new after 134k. The A3 2.0 desil is meant to be nice too but not driven them.

You'll get the same engine and parts in a VW Passat, which has a much bigger boot (I've got an A4 estate, the wife's got the Passat estate). You should get a SH one in good condition for £8K; make sure it's the 130bhp engine, not the 100bhp. Fuel economy is excellent, anything from 40 to 60 mpg depending on how you drive and our has never gone wrong but is serviced every year or 10K miles.

Another one I would check out, although I don't have any personal experience and I'm not sure of the model range/ages, is the Toyota Avensis. Toyota reliability is legendary.

Golf 1.9 or 2.0 TDI, if you can see past the badge go with LB's idea - same car same engine.

Probably won't get an A3 2.0Tdi for that, plenty of 1.9's about but don't touch the 100bhp version, 115 or 130bhp versions are much better and much smoother.

We've got 2 A6's, wife has a 2.5 TDi Avant & I've got a 2.5 TDi V6 155 bhp saloon, total mileage of both over 270,000, never miss a beat. Another vote for the VAG oil burners

When the cambelts are due for replacement come and have a days shopping in Canterbuy and let me save you £'s

Another vote for Vectra Digger........try the 3.0 V6 diesel if you can find one, not too many about compared to the 1.9 but only a group higher on insurance and 40+mpg, very smooth, tractable and sounds very nice too, a sort of refined growl if that floats you're boat! 1.9 feels a little nippier but the V6 does it effortlessly. SRI version sprung on the stiff side so ride quality on bumpy roads a bit suspect. A lot of car for relatively little money.

my mrs has a nissan primera 2.2dci 138bhp and she says its one of the best diesels shes ever driven, loads of boot space, plenty of space in car and it comes with sat nav as standard on the later models very smooth to drive and she gets about 35-40 mpg around town and about 50mpg on long runs
