richg
I am thinking of getting my Remi auto fitted with a full barrel hushpower sound moderator, has anyone out there got one or tried one. i have been in touch with the manufacturers and they will do the job, they quote a 60% noise reduction but i would like some first hand info if possible. can anyone help. vole
Theres an item in one of the glossy mags about a pro pigeon shooter who uses a modded semi.I use a single barrel one for daytime use near the horses and the railway station.Never a complaint.Just beware the weight and carrying problems of one fitted to a gun with a forend.Mine is fine on a folding 12g.Its only normal SG length. To have a forend and full length moderator makes for a loooong gun. ps I get offers to shoot with my Hushpower in places where you couldnt otherwise use a shotty.eg rabbits and squirrels in gardens.Other advantages, easy on the ears and little recoil plus you dont advertise your presence as much. richg
Why...?? Cat. Well Cat, I would have thought it was obvious, it's to keep the noise down, mainly to spook less pigeons that may be approaching the deeks after a shot has been fired, but also as not to alert Joe public as i often shoot close to houses and public footpaths. I once had an irate resident come stomping across the field in his pyjama's at 6am one sunday morning and said if i fired one more shot before 9am he would come back and stick my gun where the sun don't shine, and as he was the land owners brother i had no choice but to comply, he was fine about it later but it just goes to show that not everyone likes the sound of continual gunfire. But to get back to the hushpower, it's an experiment i would like to try, if it works fine, if not iv'e only lost a spare barrel (i have 3)

al4x
I reckon I'd have shoved the gun where the sun doesn't shine if you were using it at 6am near my bedroom

richg
how much does it cost to get a hushpower barrell put on? The manufacturers have quoted me £270 if i send them my gun. Richg
Scarpa
I may be wrong but I believe that fitting a moderator to a semi is a little less efficient due to the action opening and allowing gasses to escape. Only a bit louder than a breach opening gun though.
apbuild
Sporting Gun. Rabbitting with a Mossberg Full Hushpower pump in .410. Piccy of a nights bag of rabbitts totalling 530 ish. Richg That's a heck of a lot to pay to ruin a good gun, it'll end up looking (and handling) like a scaffold pole. Cat.

True, my local gunshop had a moderated pump-action in a while back and it was bloody enormous! I had a swing of it in the shop and it was a nightmare point. Like shooting with 50" inch barrels. I wouldn't have dreamt of using it from the confines of a hide.
dunganick
cat has a point, every hushpower ive shot has 1stly ruined the original gun, 2nd required a massive comb raiser to get your eye the correct level (unless the original gun never fitted you) and 3rdly has to be used with subs to make a massive difference. Now my solution would be the following: Buy a 2nd barrel, get that moderated, Consider phoning around, its not that hard a job, i actually live a few miles from where hushpowers are sold from and also most of them are butchered, i mean engineered. I have handled a rem 1100 with a 30" barrel + 4" of mod hanging off the end. It was awful, it turned one oe best handeling semi shotguns into bar none the worst. I can appreciate the need, but i would recomend getting a spare barrel, having that butchered instead, at least then you can sell the gun on afterwards (hish powers drop massively in value, albeit they sell easy) Also be aware of prices and avalibilty of subs, also be aware that they come in few shot sizes and arnt too hot grouping wise from the ones i have experiance of (granted they were 20g) Also consider the possible cycling issues with subs and semi's Edited February 20, 2008 by dunganick
scampi
martin from leeds i have a 1100 12g remy hushpower it cycles 32g subsonics perfect you can use normal 28s but it will only cycle once because it is tuned to susonic.i have got a spare barrel.but once you fire it a few times you get used to it.the front end is a bit on the heavy side because of the moderator.as for noise it is still a bit loud for shooting around property i would be a bit carefull. bob300w
The disadvantages far outweigh the advantages, don't shoot near houses at 6 in the morning is the best answer. The only place for moderators (and I don't like them there either) is on rifles, not shotguns where you need balance and speed of swing.
