Hubbertspeak
I'm pretty new to this lark, but it seems to me that you haven't been asking at a time when the farmers actually need you. Now that the rape is coming on, the flocks will soon be breaking up and the farmers are starting to think about the pea drilling etc., when the damage starts being done, the farmers will be much more receptive to your approaches, won't they? I'm still waiting for my first permission to be signed and my details may be a bit dodgy, but come on guys, let's give the fella some encouragement! russuk
Can only echo what's already been said, just keep trying. How about beating on a local shoot during the season, no one will begrudge you a brace or two of pheasent. On a non shooting front, if you want to be even more self sufficient, how about an allotment, some growing land or some land to rear your own animals. The in-laws have recently took on some orphan and rejected lambs from a local farmer, minimal outlay and should be great eating. Chicken, turkey, duck all quite simple to keep. Take a look at this book http://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Complete-Self-...s/dp/0751364428.

tinbum71
Someone needs a hug! I'm not takin the ****! It is hard to get your 1st permission, but once you get it, the rest will follow as sure as night follows day. I found in a virgin area that turning up at someones door looking unsure and inexperienced will pay dividends. Once a permission is granted, visit all his neighbors like you are doing him a favour and they'll not want to be left out. Good luck, seriously!! lock&load
i know its been said again and again but keep chipping away sooner or later you will get a break, try finding some common ground with the farmer whats happening in your area local news that affects them stright talk no bull, and once you get some permission name drop i.e i shoot over farmer x? land would you consider allowing me to shoot over yours get some public liability cover from one of the organisations, dont give up its hard i know but we have all been their and land is getting harder to find. good luck on another note i see you are in hull i know a few farmers round ripon who have problems and they are useually welcomeing to responsible shooters, try the vermin approach first crow and magpie shooting it will come together Edited February 25, 2008 by lock&load
scolopax
Nowt to be ashamed of, a good Hull accent!! You have a PM. Top tip... when asking for permission first find the problem, get out into the sticks and look for a field with pigeons feeding on it, at this time of year it will probably be rape. once you have found the field then find the farmer. Simply ask politely if you can have a go at the pigeons for one day. Stress you are not asking for year round permission. If he says yes then go out and have a good day, if not much happens when you are out shooting then try to sit it out for most of the day. Then go back and tell him how you did, if you did not get many be truthful but tell him you kept them off all day, i.e you protected his crop very well! Do not under any circumstances leave any litter or empty cartridge cases behind. If the farmer goes to look at where you were shooting he should have difficulty finding your position afterwards. A few piles of pigeon feathers are acceptable! keep an eye on the field afterwards, if the pigeons comeback then ask again for permission, you should get on again. Treat each day as a one off, if it becomes a regular occurence then the farmer may say to you come when you want, you now have your first permission! Do not get discouraged, small farms are sometimes easier than big farms and always easier than big estates. The same routine applies to rabbits, find the rabbits then find the farmer. Only ask to shoot the field where you see the rabbits and not his entire farm. Rabbits are very obvious during the summer months so you have the advantage of nice long evenings after work to thin the numbers out a bit. Horse paddocks are always a good bet, having a good air rifle helps, stress to the owner when asking permisson you have a high powered, accuarate and above all silent weapon to reduce the rabbit numbers. njc110381
Do us a favour and post up a letter on here exactly as you've been sending to the farmers. Let us have a read to see what we think. It may be that you're doing something they don't like, or you could just be unlucky.
