Spare/replacement barrels.

I damaged the rib and made a nasty "ding/gouge" on the barrel of my Beretta Silver Pigeon today.

Shooting rooks, crows and jackdaws over drilled barley and I was set up next to an old sheep trough.

Went out to pick up some dead birds, leant the empty gun against the hide pole and it slipped falling on the corner of the metal trough.

Its definitely not a DIY job to straighten the rib and the "ding/gouge" is not repairable in my opinion.

I am sure I read on here quite some time ago that someone bought a replacement barrel for their Beretta (not sure of the model) and that most of the barrels were interchangeable.

Does anyone know if this is correct ?

It would be the best option to just replace the barrels.

I asked about buying 28" barrels for rough shooting with my SP IV (currently 30") but the feedback was that I would be better off just buying another gun due to the expense of the barrels in isolation. That said, I wouldn't have bought another SP for rough shooting, it would have been something a bit cheaper hence more like the price of the barrels.

To answer your question, as far as I know the barrels are interchangeable.

Sorry to hear about the accident, really ticks you off when things like that happen.

get advice before you purchase spair barrels, not all barrels work, you may get a good fitting pair in your opinion, but the mechanics are doing damage to your ejectors before you know it, a lot of people unfourtunatly beleive you can interchange them at will, this is not the case, the gunmakers fit matched barrel sets and proof out fit, only when you get into the top grade/models will you be able to purchase a second set to that gun, proceed with caution is my offering cranfield, get expert advice before you buy.

Sounds like I got duff advice about the ability to interchange barrels.

not duff buddy ill advised i would say, i have 4 brownigs that i interchange regular, listen to others its imposible, its not, the main thing is knowing what is happening inside, just because the blocks drop in a set the ejectors dont think it stops there, the timing of pins and sears are working against each other incurring wear in the wrong places, before long your gun will be in for a service,,,,,of the funeral kind.

like i said it took me a while to find the ones i have that work, many others dont.

not good :P thought the rib is a fairly easy mend the barrels is not, does the dent protrude into the bore :D i beleive the silver pigeon also has hard chromed barrels, one blessing i hope, can you see any dent or deformity, if so off she goes, you will need a specialist to fix it, sorry to see the damage Cranfield, had a friends gun fall on mine once before, the friendship was tested with his very nonchalant attitude about it.

good luck in the repair.

I have spoken to Chris O the master Gunsmith this morning and I am taking the gun to him on Thursday.

He believes he can fix it from my description and doubts it has affected the bore of the gun, but obviously needs to see it.

There is no visible blemish within the barrel and the mark outside looks just like a few turns of a drill bit (small crater), rather than a dent.

He confirmed that replacements barrels would be about £700-750 plus the cost of the stock and ejector adjustments that would be necessary.

He said that many guns are damaged by people thinking that replacement barrels are 100% identical, which they aren't.

If I can get the rib repaired and the crater cosmetically improved, I will not bother my Insurance , as it would probably be below the excess.

If the gun is a "write off" without new barrels, then I will make the claim.

Thanks for the helpful comments and advice.

We should all be a bit more careful with our guns when out hide shooting and I speak as the guilty one, who is now literally paying the price. ;)

LB, the day The Pope carries your cartridge bag, will be the day you have the edge over me.:yahoo::yahoo:

Although I may be shooting a semi the next time we meet. :good:

We are all talking about the same Chris O, one of the nicest men you could ever meet. :drinks:

So Mr Cranfield you have thrown down the gauntlet  I was dragged up hard line Catholic for 16 years so I may have to call in some chips or, I could just poke your good eye out in the car park.

The rule is SA's can only be used if the shooter wears full cammo

A friend damaged his Beretta leaning it against his car. Inevitably it fell. Similar damage. A local gunsmith made an impressive repair on it, he used a special tool to lift the rib, and i think the small dent was filled with solder then re blacked. The marks can be found if you know the history and where to look but its otherwise invisible.
