Fisherman Mike
I have noticed in my recent shooting bags a proportionately higher incidence of Juvenile birds this year I would say on average more than at any time in the last 10 seasons... Anybody else noticed this trend or is it just in this area ( Stroud, Cirencester, South Glos.) FM.
The Sniper
FM, On my last outing I noticed that 7 of the 13 birds were juveniles. No neck band at all. Not much to get an average from I suppose. The area is near Leeds in West Yorkshire.. Hope this helps your survey.
ernyha
My shooting lately would reflect similar figures as yourselves but i am not sure it proves much. Normally I would have expected much larger bags than I have got this summer and my thoughts are that the adult birds are not showing in the numbers that they normally do, which makes the proportion of juveniles higher. The juveniles are not so wary as the adults and tend to fly in regardless. As we all know figures can be made to prove anything if taken out of context. Just my thoughts on the subject. remytherussell
Must agree with FM. Did not count on our 155 bird day Saturday, just that as you mentioned it I thought the same thing when counting up. Also note that the young birds crops are nowhere near as full as the adult birds. Teal
Can/should PW do a bit of research such as bag returns % of young birds accross the different months of the year. The incidences of white woodies or similar. Obviously such a survey would rely on honesty and willing reporting of a good number of people - but it might be an idea? In the afternoon 18 birds and not a young bird amongst them :yp: TUC
