New Sako Quad

Had to go oop north today for work, a 400 mile round trip. Picked this Sako Quad (.17 HMR) up on the way home... well I had to make the trip worthwhile somehow! :good:

I've not had an HMR before, anyone got any tips for good ammo? I wanted to try the Hornady 17gr v-max but they didn't have any so I got some Remington Premier 17gr v-max. I understand they are all manufactured by CCI anyway?

Hope to get her zeroed in this weekend!

Mine groups better with the Hornady V max's which curiously shoot about an inch lower than Rem's at 50 yards. I recently had to switch brands while on holiday and have yet to get to a 100 yard target in calm conditions to check it's still zero at that range.

Thanks guys :welcomeani:

The scope is an MTC Viper 4-16x50IR and the mod is the new Wildcat Whisper overbarrel .17 stainless/alloy mod which is strippable.

I've now got one box of the Hornadys for comparison... Going to try it all out this weekend hopefully!

super nice rifle mate.

im gonna get one prity much the same! are you happy with the mod? where did you get it and how much?

Hi Alex,

I got the mod direct from Wildcat, £125. Yes it is rather pricey for a rimfire mod (compared to SAK etc) but I really like the way it oversleeves the barrel, keeping the additional length to a minimum. The build quality is also excellent and it strips right down. I'm planning to zero the rifle tomorrow so hopefully it performs well in the sound department too. As it's an HMR I'm not expecting miracles like half the noise of a moderator that costs half as much but to be honest if it performs as well as a SAK I'll be happy!

I've just got a Wildcat Predator 8 for the .243 too and the HMR mod looks like a mini version of that! ;) (although when you strip them down the internals are rather different.)

Right, well it's zeroed in!

The mod works really well, hard to draw comparisons with other mods without hearing them side by side, but I'm certainly happy with the way it performs. The wind was blowing away from the farm and the farmer said he only just made out a couple of shots.

the wind was a bit gusty, so it wasn't ideal, but here's the groups I ended up with:

100 yards, bottom target first, 5 shots at 100 yards. Then two shots into top target (the two far right), gave it a couple of clicks left and up then shot the remaining 5 shots into the top target. The grid is 1".

And this was 2p taped to the board at 30 yards. I managed to recover the piece of coin with the remains of the bullet welded to it from the piece of plywood behind. Certainly shows the pace of this round!

Inflation is now 2p better

I've only tried the Hornady Varmint Express and the Remington Premier, both 17gr v-max so far and to be honest I couldn't really tell them apart. It was a bit windy and I haven't really done much rifle shooting for over ten years, having only just got back into it relatively recently so my marksmanship probably isn't that hot either so in different hands they might group differently I suppose... but certainly for the time being I'm happy to stick with the remingtons as they seem in good supply round here at the moment.
