Gutting Knife

Hi All

I've been looking to get a knife with a gut hook on it. Does anyone use them or is the general feeling that they are just something else to carry? Will be used on bunnies.

Any advice or experiences gratefully received.

cheers

If you've got the money i recomend one of Bernie Garland's knives. Doesn't have a gut hook on it but his design makes it just as easy to use as a gut hook, plus the craftsmanship is excellent. If you want details PM me.

As for experiance with a gut hook, i've only used one once on a roe buck and i didn't find it saved me that much time, you still have to be careful you don't rip the inards with it.

I prefer a drop point knife to a clip point for gutting smaller mammals like rabbits as it cuts in a line without "digging in" which a clip point does to a certain extent, though I prefer a clip point for deer etc. as I have room enough for two fingers to guide and protect the blade.

Some guys on here like to use the stanley knife "carpet" style gut hook like knives for rabbits but I haven`t used one so can`t say. Gut hooked knives tend to be for bigger animals like deer.

I've used everything from a stanley knife through a veg knife to a knife with a gut hook and although they will all do the job .. I would recommend sticking to your plan and get a reasonable gut hook one.

The only thing that I would look out for is that the inside of the hook is fairly big to give plently of access for sharpening the inside of the hook (both Ricky Green's and Scarpa's knives would allow this)

I woud recomend the Gerber Gator® Fixed Blade Gut Hook or the Gerber Gator Folder Gut Hook,

it can be used as a knife aswell as having a discreet gut hook, good for bunnies. In my opinion this would be far more useful than some of the odd looking single purpose tools that look like they belong in a ninja movie not out in the field :good: that some people are trying to guide you towards, and since it is a Gerber, you know it wil be razor sharp from the factory and made of top quality steel. It is expensive though, that is a downside. It also has there special design no slip grip, which really is the best availible!
