newbie newt
Hi Got an AYA yeoman which is highly recommended by this forum. Blasted 150 (250 shots?) clays with 7.5 shot (hand thrown clays I don't have a trap). I went pigeon shooting today and missed everything (6 shots) I know I'm a starter but is the choke on my gun to tight (full and 3/4) I don't want to sell the gun and buy another can I just forget about it and get used to it in time or should I get them bored out or somemat? Any help would be great Cheers
henry d
Get the chokes opened out to IC or 1/4 & 1/2 and see the difference, my mate did straight away !
Guest Mr Pieman
Leave the chokes alone!!! Practice more!!
newbie newt
Thanks for the advice fella's bit contradictory not sure which way to go now! Good advice about practicing though, I think I'll get some sort of clay thrower and go down the mud flats at low tide. according to http://www.hrwscothunt.ndtilda.co.uk/info/data.htm it seems there is not a massive amount of difference between the two choke options (leave alone and bore them out) 5-6 inches. Maybe this is significant I don't know, does changing to say fiber wadding cartridges improve the spread by say a couple of inches? maxwell
I bought a shotgun in January and couldn't hit a barn door, it had 3/4 fitted, i swapped to 1/4 choke and boy what a difference it made, i can now hit the barn door it's just everything else i miss
Trussman
I agree with previous posts, get your chokes opened out.
chrispti
Leave the chokes alone!!! Practice more!! Good call I brought an AYA yoeman about 5/6 weeks ago, 1/2 and full choked. Had my first go on it at a clay ground and only hit about 14 out of 40!! I too was going to open the chokes up but thought Id give it a bit of time first and see how I get on with it. I have been using it nearly every day since and I love it,(my extrema 2 hasn't seen the light of day!!!.) I haven't had a day out down the woods where I have come home empty handed yet!!!. Practice makes perfect P.S you will be looking at about £50 per barrel for a re-bore Edited June 15, 2008 by chrispti
Edward
Leave them and practise My Greener Gp has full choke and i could not hit a thing and now I can get 78/80 with it
beatingisbest
A good few years ago i was in exactly the same position as you but i left the chokes as they were at 1/2 and full and im so glad i did! IMO chokes are all down to confidence not science.
newbie newt
Once again thanks for the advice as to getting the chokes altered if I get both opened up that £100 or so wouldn't I be better to swap/exchange for another gun already more open or spend £100 on cartridges and practice with this one! I just can't decide! I have bought some decoys so I'll try over them before i decide as this may be easier than rough shooting which is pretty close range sharp shooting stuff Will
webber
Chokes 1/4 & 1/2, get to a clay ground and practice. 7.1/2 for clays fine, but not my choice for woodies! webber
Cranfield
I would suggest you change to 30gms No6 shot and persevere on the (real) pigeons. For the cost of opening your current chokes up, you could probably sell the Yeoman and buy a reasonable S/H Multichoke.
newbie newt
Once again thanks for all your input I have ordered up some 32g pigeon no6s (hull special pigeon) and I'm going to keep plodding on for a bit and than decide what to do I think I may be holding the gun slightly off vertical (sort of canted to the left forcing the barrels right) and shooting right a wee bit. keeping my elbow out at 90 degrees to my body seems to correct this although I have no idea if this is a good position or not? Cheers Will
MK38
The chokes seem a bit tight to me... 1/4 & 3/4 or 1/4 & 1/2 might be a bit better......... But if your not sure if your even holding the gun right, save yourself alot of money and grief by having some lessons... you could spend thousands of £ just banging away and hoping you'll improve...just a couple of lessons could see you making a dent in the local Pigeon population far quicker! vole
Hi mate . I may be a couple of years down the learning curve and your questions remind me of me then. Get some instruction on how to hold your gun if not sure and be sure to use game loads ie 6 or so for pigeon. Give yourself the advantage of more open chokes (at least one barrel) and dont attempt long shots until you can hit the closer stuff. Your confidence will build when you start hitting them. I am using i/c in my semi auto at present and am not missing many out to 30 yards. Good choice in gun BTW.
newbie newt
Another thing that occurred to me I guess I am shooting left handed with a right handed gun, I'm right handed but always have shot of the left shoulder as I'm very left eyed. this might be a problem? Thanks once again for all your time
MJN
NN, have you tried shooting at a pattern plate or using a laser boresighter to see if you are actually pointing the gun in the right place (and no I'm not taking the mick) M. Ice
I seem to miss the closer stuff, bit hit most out at a distance, mind you i am a bit weird
newbie newt
can you rent a boresiter they look fantastic aids I'd love to have a shot with one. Your right I might not be aiming it correctly partly because I hve trouble getting over the sight line as the right hand stock is to tight on my cheek. I am currently converting my gun to left hand stock with an old kettle and milkbottle to steam it. it looks quite heathrobinson I'll post a youtube vid for you all to have a laugh at.... fingers crossed eh! Had to strip the lacquer though any advice on finishes I thought oil it would be simplest. Cheers once again never got into fishing forums but this is great. newbie newt
Might be wrong but I thought it was a kind of laser that fits in the mussel of the gun and aids mounting and aiming but they are quite expensive and I thought it might be possible to rent or have a go with one. Perhaps there something else completely? Any hows I guess pattern plates are cheap and do something similar I'll try that (presumably aim at a large piece of paper is the story here ). Thanks once again for all the help

To be honest the best way to hit more birds is to keep praticing or have someone experienced with you in the field telling you why you are missing.
