Mungler
A brief summary of today (26.06.08). Leave house 5.45 a.m to drive to Bisley to meet up with StuartP. Get to Bisley village at 8.15 and find small bakers for bacon sandwich and cup of coffee (this was the highlight / result of my day) Get to Bisley and cough £17 for 2 x 1 hour tickets for Melville to zero Get to Melville to find the range officer doing a good impression of the Warden off Dad's army Of the four of us, we all received at least two reprimands each - my last one was for mishandling a live broom on the range We were on Melville for all of 15 minutes before it becomes apparent that we couldn't actually zero any of our rifles over .22RF The range officer hadn't heard of the ".223" calibre I was planning to use and had to phone it through to HQ - we leave As I leave StuartP reminds me at the top of his voice that I need to sweep up [good one, done like a kipper] 9.00 a.m safety briefing 9.30 a.m we start the day with a 45 minute demonstration of how not to operate the running deer target system This is followed by a 45 minute wait for the one person who apparently did know how to work it This was followed by it working on and off for the next hour - when it broke all shooting had to cease as various untrained monkeys went up and down the range I fire 12 or 16 shots (in all the excitement I lost count, however, by this point I was not feeling lucky). After my "go" we wait for approximately 1 hour for another go. 11.45 deer target system breaks 11.50 a.m. all shooting has to stop (6 static and 1 rifle on the running deer) as some numpty has to go forward to do his DSC 1 shooting test. Mungler has words with the BASC rep and leaves. 12.30 lunch, range shut for 1 hour. 190 mile round trip, 4 hours on the M25, £17 in the shop, a day taken off work, up at 5.30 a.m.... and to fire a dozen rounds - PRICELESS  The BASC will be getting one of my finest ****ty letters very shortly. They couldn't run a bath. Edited June 26, 2008 by Mungler

"we all received at least two reprimands each - my last one was for mishandling a live broom on the range" And quite correctly so, gross misconduct in my opinion, you could have had somebodies eye out with that, they are not toys you know..... I trust that this is not a forerunner of what to expect at the PW day in August?

alexm
Really disappointing to hear this... I had heard good things about these days previously and was looking forward to having a go. In fact I almost went to this one! Out of interest, was the chap shooting his DSC test shooting a .308 Blaser by any chance? I have a feeling he was the one on my DSC course who failed the shooting test last month. I remember the BASC guys suggesting he redid it at the running deer day at Bisley. If it was him then I feel sorry for him as he'd be under even more pressure with a load of disgruntled running deer attendees standing waiting! Mungler
I have nothing reasonable or sensible to add given that I am still most miffed.
Markio
Sounds like you just need to copy and paste that first post into your letter. I think i'd be more than miffed.
pavman
I have been inspired by this and may re start a shoot the cat with spud guns test, we ran this on the estate when I was a kid and I always did well, I wore my “Ginger Tom Top Potato†badge with pride for weeks on end, I was eventually toppled by Desmond Lewis who bagged a brace of Siamese’s on the last day, ******, I still hate him Tracey Smith was all over him after that
MC
Andy, Did you get the Range officers name? I would send one of your famous ****ty letters to the NRA as well. I have used larger calibers than the .223 on Melville. Did you get a refund? Why did some numpty have to go forward to take the shooting test? I thought the running deer was at 100yds? Isn't that what you do the test at? I thought the only .22 rimfire restriction was on the running boar. Sounds like you may need training on the broom handling though,

AndyCM
It cost me a whole lot more than that ! I dropped into GT Shooting on the way home just to feel like I'd not wasted the day. Bought a cheapie shotgun and a load of reloding gear. The shotgun bagged me a magpie and saved the day! There seemed too many shooters for the facilities too - I lasted until about 11:30 at Bisley. Getting a dsc1 retake done there (luckily I missed that somehow) is pants. My first and last BASC shoot at Bisley. AndyCM
Mungler
For fairness and balance I should update that the BASC have offered a full refund and me to attend gratis at the competition. They did this very quickly and politely. An organisation with very good manners. Incidentally they are taking it further with the British Deer Stalking lot whose range and kit they sub out. Cranfield
Its a shame you had to suffer the frustration and grief in the first place, but you cannot fault their response. I assume stuartp will be joining you in the "refund" queue.
Dunkield
Incidentally they are taking it further with the British Deer Stalking lot whose range and kit they sub out. To keep it real, it was the British Sporting Rifle Club not the BDS. And it was abit of a shambles, but I have been to few of these and they are normally pretty well orgainsed events. Its a shame you had to suffer the frustration and grief in the first place, but you cannot fault their response.I assume stuartp will be joining you in the "refund" queue. No, we went for nice lunch  in the sun at the clayground and shot then running boar and the static deer untill we were turfed out. Why did some numpty have to go forward to take the shooting test? I thought the running deer was at 100yds? Isn't that what you do the test at? I thought the only .22 rimfire restriction was on the running boar. The 'numpty' was re-taking his DSC1 stalking test, which is shot at 100 then 70 then 30 yards. I think he failed again and then re-re-took it in the afternoon. Yes, the running boar is shot with .22 rimfires. There seemed too many shooters for the facilities too - I lasted until about 11:30 at Bisley. Which one were you Andy? I guess you didn't know who we were otherwise you could have said hello to me and Mr V Meldrew
bob300w
So you had the BSRC, BDS and BASC all involved in the organisation? S'truth, with Mung thrown in as well, it's a recipe for disaster.
Dunkield
Luckily the BDS weren't involved at all, BASC hire the range from BSRC for 3 days a year.
David BASC
We had word today from the range that it looks like it was a faulty microswitch on their kit that was the problem. A very frustrating day for sure - for everyone, you can only imagine how our guys felt when all this started to go wrong and there was little we could do apart from say sory and offer money back. Highlander
I used to live about 5 minutes walk from Bisley and even joined the BSR club at one point but I have to say the organisation was pants and the old farts that ran it were a major joke. Don't know if they've replaced their club rifles by now but they used to be ex WW1 rejects
Mungler
As above, the BASC handled this well and it's just as well because my renewal notice came through the door today Alas, there is no need for me to put up a thread querying whether I should renew my BASC membership or to look elsewhere - I am now looking for the "Do not feed the Bivvy smilie". Dunkield
I used to live about 5 minutes walk from Bisley and even joined the BSR club at one point but I have to say the organisation was pants and the old farts that ran it were a major joke. Don't know if they've replaced their club rifles by now but they used to be ex WW1 rejects It's an odd club Highlander and no mistake, I still have the emails that were exchanged when I enquired about joining them. They charge £70 'admin fee' for the first year on top of the £65 membership as well! I asked if I could use the 100 yard range for practice at weekends and the answer was "no, we are booked up for the next 2 years at weekends, you can use it during the week, if it is free" I pointed out that I hadn't retired yet and was told that if was serious about shooting I would take time off work to do it B) At that point I severed communications. Having said all that, the running and static setup they have linked up with the electronic scoring system is the best in the land - when it works One of the regulars at these events drives down from Scotland 3 times a year just to shoot this discipline. So fair play to BASC for hiring it and letting us mere mortals have a go without having to join BRSC
dunganick
Other Clubs can hire the range. My club hires it about 10 times a year and run with with our own (equally useless) RCO's, However as most fo the members are also BSRC members (for other fascilities) they have a good idea of how to run it. Excellent range, Havent shot it in ages though. My experience of running deer is its a waste of time. Running boar is great fun though. Especially now its a self marker.
