Pigeon quiz

I have worries about two of the "correct" answers - 10 and 13.

Certainly the answer given to 10 differs from that normally applied to wildfowling from a hide. What is vital is that if two people are shooting relatively close to each other (within shotgun range), they do not use separate hides and, thereby, fail to communicate with each other adequately. The normal advice would be to shoot from the same hide and communicate clearly to avoid accidents. I suppose the suggested answer is the fail-safe option as long as it does not suggest to two friends shooting over the same decoy spread to shoot from two hides within range of each-other.

Hope no-one goes to jail on account of Q13!! I don't think any of the options is correct.

Having looked after the BASC insurance policy claims for 13 years I can assure you that two people shooting from a hide at the same time is dangerous and should be avoided. In my time it has resulted in three deaths and several broken gun claims.

Yes the answer is the safest option as you correctly point out. Just because it is different from advice given by some to wildfowlers does not make it right I am affraid. We risk falling into the 'it will never happen to me, me and my mate are far to wise and safe for that...' trap.

As for Q13- it is looking at armed trespass you would not commit this offence in Scotland under the circumstances described but would in England & Wales for example.. If you went to jail or not would depend on the CPS and the court.

The point here is do not take your gun onto land where you have no right to be- common sense- yes.

So what do wildfowlers do to ensure safety when in a hide together? I'm sorry but your reply makes little sense to me.

Keep muzzles pointing up and have a clear agreement that one Gun shoots birds to the right and the other to the left. I think that David BASC will confirm that the three deaths he mentioned were pigeon shooting rather than wildfowling and that at least 2 of the 3 involved foreigners. Dead right, I would not share a pigeon hide with an Italian!

But, of course, always better safe than sorry.

Yep all the deaths I know about have been pigeon shooting related, and indeed our CoP repeats this warning. My only fear is that in my oppinion, shooting from a hide is shooting from a hide, and two loaded guns, with wo guys and possibly a dog or two, in poor light, in a small area cluttered with kit possibly is, again in my oppinion, high risk.

Re Q13, yep the meaning was good but my wording is't so it will be tightened up on Monday!

It's more than high risk, It's an accident waiting to happen, and what is the point? Two people in separate hides, a hundred yards apart will have far more shooting than two sharing, and without the safety concerns.
