barrie0
Hi all, Had the Escort out last Saturday on the rooks, etc. I put about 40 shells through it (Eley HiFlyer 30 gram no.6). Previous to which it has had around 300-350 shells through the barrel 24gram 8's -32gram 6's nothing bigger. After reading past posts on here about being able to use Beretta Mobil chokes with the Escort I put one of my spare 1/4 chokes in the barrel. I went to clean the gun tonight and found this. Suppose it could have been a lot worse, and I am not sure about my warranty after using the Mobil choke even though the gun is around 3 months old. Anyone know the price of a new barrel. 2shots
Ive seen this before when I was in the local gunshop but the beretta choke had been shot out of the barrel of the hatsan and the barrel had split like a banana skin, anyone advising people to try the chokes in obviously havent done it themselves or realise the dangers concerned,
Hunter
Not good at all! could be risk of injury/life with this, whoever is spreading that nonsense needs to get their facts right before someone gets hurt. Never compromise with firearms.
stevethevanman
dont always believe what people tell you is right for your gun or is nesseceraly better, wow but could of been alot worse. tosspot
£120 without any chokes
Spaniel
I think you are lucky that this did not blow up in your face......I wouldnt ever mix/match my chokes, I keep the beretta chokes for the SP3 and i only use the escort chokes which came with the gun. Cheers
barrie0
"£120 without any chokes" That's not too bad. When I put the choke in it seemed to fit well, the edge of the choke to the barrel showed no lip etc. Think I have learned a lesson now ! but it could end up with serious injury to someone else who does the same, that's why I decided to post this thread. vole
Can you not just lop the damaged bit off the end? Dont mean that. Hope you get a new barrel for not too many ££,s.
Windknot
Yup, a cylinder barrel is always handy to have around.
MC
Providing there is enough solid rib left then cut the choke section off completely and cleant the end of the barrel up. Reposition your bead and hey presto you have a true cylinder barrel. Only shorter. I used to work for Sportsmarketing in Colchester and this is how the chokes were varied on all baikal shotguns. They all came from Russia either 1/2 and full or full and extra full. We then had set lengths to cut the barrels to depending on what choke the customer wanted. It is not done now as they are nearly all multichoke.
Plumbob
looks like the pressure behind the shot plug and the wad, has got between the choke and the barrell when the shot was squeezed through the choke and blown out the thinest part of it. did the choke go tight on the thread? I only ever put my optimas in finger tight but will now nip them up just incase. bad luck mate, every days a school day.
Zapp
Wow, I'd say you had a lucky escape there Well done for posting it up. ZB
Bagsy
Really interesting post that. I've often done my chokes up finger tight only to find they've worked loose and, as a previous poster also said, now give them a pinch with the key. I know this wasn't the case with the chokes above but it makes you realise what could happen.
barrie0
"did the choke go tight on the thread? I only ever put my optimas in finger tight but will now nip them up just incase" The choke was nipped up tightly as I always have done with all my past shotguns. Have now dropped the barrel off at the gunshop and will wait for them to come back with options and prices. Good job I have 2 guns now 1 is out of action
Zapp
Perhaps this should be made a sticky as it is a safety concern. That last pic makes me shudder - terrifying! ZB Edited July 2, 2008 by Zapp Brannigan
Mattw
I dont know if it helps but the guys in rugby told me spare barrels were ~80£ for the escorts.
Hunter
If you post me the barrel I will cut it down for you and re-position the bead FOC (providing postage costs)... It will keep you going on cylinder choke untill you get a new barrel sorted..
dazzler22
exactly the same happend to my escort, except i was using the std choke, mine was replaced under warrenty, I now tend to check how tight the choke is after every 10 shots or so, they recon it happend because the choke came loose, unlucky either way! Cheers Dazzler
barrie0
£80 !, ****** I have left it with the shop and they have ordered a new barrel £140. Although I have opted for a shorter 26". "If you post me the barrel I will cut it down for you and re-position the bead FOC (providing postage costs)... It will keep you going on cylinder choke untill you get a new barrel sorted..". Very kind of you, could I post it to you after the 21st (Payday) although I would not let you do it for free. It would be handy to have a spare barrel. Is it okay to have a spare barrel (any restrictions etc) and is it legal to post ?. The last post from Dazzler22 unnerves me a bit mind !. Cheers Guys
Hunter
I recvently posted a barrel, its not problem because it is only a tube. Its only firearm RIFLED barrels that must be handled with FAC and written on all documents whoever is handling it  (unless you are an RFD but thats another story). You can have as many barrels as you like as long as they are not rifled slug barrels. PM me when you are ready to post it, and I will give you postage details etc EDIT: I had an Escort, no issues with the choke and you really dont have to check it every 10 mins. Infact I never checked it. Just screw it in nice and tight (dont over do it) and it will stay put. make a habbit of checking it with the choke key when cleaning, other then that there should be no issues on a standard Escort. mossy835
i only use chokes that come with the gun.
Hunter
i only use chokes that come with the gun. Or otherwise chokes designed for that make/model gun that are clearly stated by the manufacturer. A lot of Skeet shooters etc will use aftermarket chokes to improve performance or looks, which is not a problem if they are designed for that gun. barrie0
Cheers Hunter will Pm you later in the month. May also have to have a word with the gun shop regarding their barrel price. The choke was not loose as I checked before I went out with the gun. But I have found an interesting read on loose shotgun chokes and damage. You will need acrobat reader to read the link. http://www.basc.org.uk/media/screw_in_choke_report.pdf
