AndyCM
There are at least 3 foxes in a thick bank on the edge of a field and they have proven a bit more reluctant to get shot than most I have come across. They have been out early and I have been viewing them in the past from a fair distance, but approach routes are limited - a river and a road and a railway not helping much Lamping them has proved unproductive, we shot one a few weeks back in the lamp but the others are gone at the flash of the lamp I have tried, waiting at dusk, (two no shows and a third time the fox was on a trot and no stopping him for a shot) stalking them - they just laugh at me calling with no lamp in moonlight waiting at longer range off the 4x4 roof - I missed All these ploys have not worked so far so it's time for the next plan On my way to work this morning I had a job to do - install a high seat - fortunately there is a clump of trees in the middle of the field and a few options for a high seat. There is even a conifer that is just like a telegraph pole (no branches in the way) and surrounded by other trees for background cover. You can see it in the photo. They hang out in that far bank and don't venture far if they suspect an ambush ! - I have even seen two foxes jump up on a bale together and start look out duty (staring over at a paddock, where they go sniffing) Seat installed after a bit of a trim to allow a clear shot The bait I put down last night was all gone at first light, so hopefully my return before dusk tonight with some more stink to put out will work - if not I may have to try dynamite next Ready made backstops - they will be more useful to provide a light background to highlight the foxes (hopefully) at dusk - no lamp tonight - they'll just run Rifle of choice tonight- 22LR (a horsey paddock is not far behind) so sshhhhhhhh Range to bales 50 & 60 yards. Let's see what happens later - fingers crossed eh AndyCM - the things you do to get that varmint
Vegeta
Tried a filter on the lamps. If its legal over there I'd be going trapping next. They are bait friendly by the sounds of it so maybe they fall for the trap. Loving the high seat though

Agree. If they're runners then forget the rifles, load the shottie to the hilt. As I was reading your post I was thinking high seat as well

AndyCM
Thanks for the comments Guys, I was outfoxed again last night - was in the seat nice and early at 5:30 and after 3 hours no sign of any foxes (bait whiff was blowing the right way too). I'm glad you can't wear binoculars out too easy - they had virtually 3 hours of constant scanning. There was enough moon (probably too much for the foxes) to use them ok. Well the setup is good, view / bales / seat position and branches all in the right place + the bright moon did not light me up as there is enough tree cover. Now just need some customers I guess the seat stays there for a while and keep baiting. I'm away this weekend and will tell a mate where the seat is - I have a feeling I will get a short text message when I'm away "1", or "2" or "3" Cheers AndyCM
Dougy
Just a thought Andy are you 100% they are not under your high seat, having read through a couple of times, there's a chance you could be sitting on top of them. As i said just a thought.
pavman
Bob told me about alarm mines, it may just help you also, where is he when you need him get a cheap clock (poundland) and a plastic sandwich box, drill a hole in a position that will allow a loop of fishing line to be placed through the box and round the battery, make another to tether the box to a stake or tree etc, on the other end of the battery line (about 2 foot) tie the bait, rabbit etc, Fox comes along takes bait which pulls battery out and stops clock, he get a tasty meal, you get to know at what time he makes his rounds, do it a few times to check and that’s when you know when to sit out in the high seat, I just tried it and it worked a treat

JohnGalway
I'd prefer a trail camera for watching bait. More reliable, you get photo evidence of what's come along, plus time and other details. You also get as many photos of different animals as will fit on your memory card The downsides being it's more expensive than a battery operated clock, and someone might nick it! tikkamark
I hope you nail them after all that effort andy They will eventually slip up some evening even if you dont have bait setup they should still feed in that general area its just a matter of time.Calling from that highseat at dawn would also work well id say
