GJUK
Evening all. An item that has played on my mind recently is carrying knives while out in 'public'. Obviously you have to be a little scrote to carry a 'blade' in a city centre but in the middle of a field, while shooting, where you have a purpose for carrying a knife – be it field work or sorting out your shot wild life... Do you carry a knife? My common sense thoughts on the matter are: Well if the police have given you a SGC/FAC and trust you with a powerful weapon, then carrying a knife shouldn’t be a problem. Legally however this may not be the case! I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts Regards, Jon
Ferret Master
Providing you have a genuine reason to posess a knife at the time you are carrying it then it is perfectly legal. For example going out, while and on the way home from shooting having a knife in your pocket for gutting and skinning quarry would be a perfectly acceptable legal justification for carrying a blade. However leaving it in your jacket pocket and going clubbing a week later with it in there is not. FM
dogfox
its an unwritten law with me to never, NEVER go out without the knife, it being my lock knife when decoying or rough shooting to my 5" sheath knife when i go foxing (for tailing). if your entrusted witha sgc/fac there should be no reason why your not allwoed to carry one with you when out hunting. GJUK
Thanks guys, great responses. if your entrusted witha sgc/fac there should be no reason why your not allwoed to carry one with you when out hunting. I agree, that was my thinking. I go camping and take a Kukri with me most of the time to chop up fire wood. You just have to hope you don't meet Mr Jobsworth to cause issues on route! As its about 13" long lol Cheers guys. Jon
rabbithunter2008
You can carry a knife in public if it's tool of your trade or your going or come from fishing, hunting etc And don't leave it car after you have being out
libs
A guy got stung for having a Knife in his pocket when in his car on the way to work. Pulled over for some routine thing and ended up with a summons. Long story short be careful lads... And can't they just put a clause on the FAC/SGC that states "responsible...blah..sensible.... can carry a knife when pursuing a legal quarry..... soming ... blah." Scarpa
It really is very simple... if you have a reasonable excuse as to why you are carrying a knife then you are commiting no offense. Leaving it in your car the day after being out is no excuse.. you may then be pulled up on a charge... you have to be returning from fishing, camping, shooting etc. Popping into a shop with a knife on your belt when walking back from the outdoors is ok. paul1966
i vaguely remember about a story in the news where a chap was took to court because he had a stanley knife on him, turns out he was a carpet fitter on his way home. the court threw the case out and criticised the police for not using common sense. MM
i carry a small penknife on my keyring, and a swiss-card in my wallet. never though about stabbing sombody with it though. I also have a knife "secured" in my car. ie, out of the way, sheathed, and you would only find it if you had a good look. bottom line is this, i might need one, and im no loony, so ill carry one in my car. Wookie
I carry a sub-3" fixed blade knife when I am out in the field for paunching and skinning, but when I am done up on the fields, it comes out of my packet and goes in a dorr pocket until I get home. Then it gets washed and put back in my kit box till next time I go out. I never carry any type of weapon when I am out and about or at work. I have no good reason to have one on me and I don't need one in any case.
Gully
Its only knives with blades over 3" long that are fixed or lockable that are affected by the law. No-one can prosecute you for carrying a folder under 3" except under the old offensive weapon law. For these knives the onus is on them to prove you are carrying it to cause trouble as opposed to 3"+ where the onus is on you to prove you have good purpose. The CPS recently took a case against a gardener for having a sickle in his car while at work. They dropped the case just before it went to trial having made the poor guy worry for 8 months! http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/316...the-in-van.html Don't forget, if you are arrested for carrying a knife and you accept the offer of a caution (which is probably what they will offer you), it will affect your FAC/SGC renewal. Baldrick
I always carry a Leatherman, a locking folder and a fixed-blade stalking knife when I am shooting. I also keep a knife hidden in the car. Because I live and work on farms, my car contains a variety of axes, bill-hooks and often a chainsaw too, just in case. I firmly believe that those people who shoot and work the land should get special dispensation for carrying knives and other edged implements. Same goes for anglers, carpet fitters etc.
malkiserow
I am aware of a court case involving a knife attack, a week of trial proceedings then one of the days a juror had a leatherman in his pocket, as everyday, but was checked by security. The Judge halted the case and started it all over again with a different jury. Common sense no, but it shows how judges can act in strange ways over knives. Wookie
It's all kneejerk. Governments in general seem to just lurch from one crisis to the next, taking action on those that have the most positive publicity behind them. e.g. Nutter shoots people with legally held firearm. Clamp down on legally held firearms via new legislation instead of identifying why a nutter held a license.

sbald
I always have my lock knife and a leatherman on me when I am in work clothes or shooting gear and I use both at least ten times a day and would be lost without them. I also have a tiny pocket knife which I carry when dressed up, my wife and kids are always asking to use my knife to open something or cut something. It is not the knife thats dangerous but the person using it.
