perfect
The sun was really low in the sky and i noticed the birds were jinking away from the magnet so i looked at the magnet from different angles and saw it was flashing when the light hit it, has anyone had this? and what did you do to combat the problem? the magnet is powder coated or sprayed green but has a shiny finish. PS the magnet was working fine all day until the sun went low and was surrounded by cloud so that the light was strong from just one direction. p-a-s
hi perfect.after experiencing the same thing after taking a newbie pigeon shooter out he sugested some sniper tape,(and he very kindley posted me a roll) and i covered most of the magnet in the tape i then set to with a black barbecue spray paint.,i didnt spray the whole magnet and i only gave it a light coat this gave it a light black almost grey colour, and with the tape being a light green it blends in realy well.the only down side is it does increase the diameter of the magnet arms, but i should have done a neater job.when it starts getting tatty i will strip it all off and do a better job, the paint was wilkinsons own brand barbcue paint, dont use the plasti kote brand as it is not as dull as the wilko 1.hth paul PS.if your in my neck of the woods,(Burton on Trent )bring your magnet i will give you some tape, Edited December 28, 2008 by p-a-s
richie76
I have just bought a magnet and after reading your problem.I'm now thinking of covering the arms in realtree gun tape. This would cure and problem of the sun glinting off it.The only problems i can think of using tape is-the tape doesn't like rain and it doesn't last forever EDIT: p a s beat me to it Edited December 28, 2008 by richie76
EvoCars
try painting it with matt camo paint, or even just ruffing the paint up that its got now, to try and take the shine off
perfect
Thank you for you replies, tape and spray would help but obviously some of the parts retract and extend so got to be careful, a good roughing of the paint and a light coat of spray might do the trick. EvoCars
bit of a bodge, when I first made mine, I was out and like yours catching the sun really bad, rubbed mud over it took the shine away, my magnet looked like arnie in the predator film, but it work for the day untill I repaited it with matt nato green
richie76
try painting it with matt camo paint, or even just ruffing the paint up that its got now, to try and take the shine off Had a look at my new rotary- for such a mat finish it does glint well under the light. Iv just set about all the arms and mounts with Emmery cloth to take the shine off it. Its worked really well, and only taken me half an hour, Good thinking EC Edited December 29, 2008 by richie76
Cosd
I used camo tape on mine, been on there for about 6 months now and hasn't started peeling or anything like that.
activeviii
quick and easy fix is to pinch the wife's, or mums, green pot scrubber or scotchbrite pad and lightly go over the paint to give it a matt finish. the other way is homebase do a none UV reflective spray paint but i cant remember the name of it but they do earthy tones. scotchbrite it to key the old paint and then flash over with spray. deny essex
I always use the cloth camo tape on mine , lasts for years , gets tatty but tha helps break the straight line of the arms up, paint rubbed down or not with transportation and/or packed in a bag will eventualy shine again to some degree. Agreed. Even rubbing down with scotchbrite, when its dry its matt but when wet it will still glisten..... Thumbs up for the camo tape from me and it was Denny's advice I took for this a while back now.
mikee
i noticed the same flashing from my magnet arms, i just sanded all the paint off and left them outside, they now have a dull rusty finish which seems to work mikee

You might as well rub a load of mud on the arms, as I made the mistake of buying the tape.
