Tobyb525
Hi, I have a fairly new browning 525 12g shotgun and today I tried to use some plastic snap caps with it but when I pull the trigger only the bottom pin fires and the trigger goes stiff and the top pins don't fire! The only way the top will fire is if I use the safety catch to sellect the top barrel. It works fine with real cartridges but whats going on when I use snap caps? Cheers, Toby
garyb
Ohhh tell me this is a joke It's by design.. the recoil / inertia of the 1st shot sets the gun up for the 2nd.. With snap caps there is no bang, hence why you have to do it by hand - or drop it on the ground
Tobyb525
Sorry!!! Thanks anyway, you've put my mind at rest!
V8landy
I can help you out...just bin them! Waste of time and money + get you into VERY bad habits of loading and pulling the trigger indoors. One day it might by a freak of nature be a live cartridge you put in there! Peter De La Mare
Or on the 525 you can switch between barrels on the selector, that does the same job in priming the 2nd barrel.

V8landy
Is it the fix choke light weight version? I have that one, great gun
p@cman
I have a 525 too and have never bothered with snap caps. I'm sure that people have their own opinions on the matter, but I believe that in a modern gun they are of no real benefit. Barrels stay empty until it's time time to shoot

GJUK
Don't they have a use for at the very least testing guns/old gun storage? I understand the dangers of mistaking them for real cartridges however.
TheHunter
As above, no sane shooter would pull the triggers of a shotgun indoors. They are a marketing gimmic to take the money off new shooters. PUT THEM IN THE BIN and start off on the right foot.

Micky Spillane
Don't be unkind chaps, Where else is a novice(like me) going to find this out except on here? Surely this is what a forum is all about, you know passing on the learning to us who are unschooled in such matters. Please be nice Edited January 2, 2009 by Micky Spillane

arjimlad
They are useful for checking ejector timing/function, so keep them somewhere for that.
sharpshot
i must say i agree with v8landy snap caps can give you bad habbits and are unnecessary. i know someone on my shoot that went home after the shoot cleaned his gun , put his snap caps in and went outside to fire off the action. He blew a hole in his neighbours fence , i nearly peed myself laughing at his story but could have been a lot worse

Peter De La Mare
How on earth does one mistake a live cartridge for a snap cap? Sounds like his familiarity bred a bit of contempt for the gun. Whenever I finish shooting, any spare cartridges go back in the cartridge box/bag and then they aren't near the gun when being cleaned or stored. Keeping loose cartridges around the house or in pockets is quite sloppy imho.
