Another day of shooting like a tossed from me today. Started off dropping 7 birds on an easy LR/RL crossing OR pair, then it got worse. I luckily managed to claw back some dignity by getting a few 7s on the later stands, including on a tricky overhead, distant incomer stand, but the 52 I came away with stuck in my throat a bit.

The only thing I can say in my defence is that I was shooting gun down on all stands. And there were millions of thunder flies. And it was hot.

Number 2 son tipped a drink on the laptop last night and so today I spent the whole day transferring data off the laptop onto a PC (which was broken and needed a new video card and a gazzillion updates before I could do anything).

Whole day wasted and me in a very bad mood (all day).

Laptop FUBAR'd.

It's all the toot you keep and download - the programs you use to convert stuff, iTunes, network and email settings, adobe, office, MP3 downloads, splitters blahdie blah blah.

What a pissser - can relate to that, the number of times i've had to rebuild puter - its all the ******* updates that seem to take forever. Ever thought of an external backup drive to backup entire system.

Yep been there etc

Last time this happened I had used Acronis - problem is the last time the mother board went and it so happens that the copy of Xp and the hard drive had someone cemented itself to the motherboard in question (now broken) and swapping out hard drives and backing up off the back up hard drive was to little avail.

I can back up files and data, but it's the whole *configuration* thing - getting a new computer to do what you trained the last one to do, from the little things like turning off the © auto copyright symbol in word through to the last bit of useful software that I downloaded and coughed $10 for.

But isn't there an option on some backup systems to take an image of the hard drive so you can restore entiire computer to another one - system settings an all.

acronis

This says will restore system including applications and settings

Ah ha (in the style of Alan Partridge). Now I am not techhy minded, so bear with me.

Acronis takes a complete copy image of the hard drive and the idea is that if you have a hard drive failure or virus, then you can swap out the broken / infected hard drive and replace with a newly created acronis generated image. Simples?

However, hardrives (and the contents of those hard drives) are tied to the PC motherboard (which sets out and integrate the basic building blocks and settings of the PC).

At work, I had a power surge which knackered both hard drive and motherboardin one go. Okay, so the techhy bloke did the acronis thing, but then discovered that unless the replacement hard drive goes back onto exactly the same motherboard then nothing will work - you are back round to a fresh instal and importing data and settings which can take days.

We were advised to use Acronis but to get spare motherboards for each of the PCs if we wanted a complete swap out solution i.e. something breaks, insert new motherboard and acronis harddrive image and you are off and working again within say an hour tops. Problem is it's a bit tricky trying to get motherbaords for all the PC when some are specialist built and 4 years old i.e. you jut couldn't find the bits.

Here endeth the lesson.

PCs I ******* hate them.

As the rest couldn't make it Del Digweed, Russdmc and myself formed an advance party and went to the A1 Shooting Ground for the first time.

Was pleasantly surprised with the sporting layout which we thought was quite well laid out with a good variety of birds. We shot 96 across 12 stands finishing with 75, 68 and 71 respectively - not bad considering we never 'saw' the first pair on any stand and were all caught out once or twice.

Good use was made of the tower which threw birds over various stands - I always need practice on these - no rabbits though.

A word of warning if you go - make sure you're wearing safety glasses, I was hit in the face by falling shot on one stand, no damage but was thankful for the Oakley's :whistling:

We'll be going back
