scout
Hi I am relatively new to shotgun shooting, I've been use the 12g for a while with with some success, but whilst looking round the gun shop recently I picked a nice little 410, nice and light but only sing shot. So put it back and have been having a think about it since. Is it worth owning one and what would I use it for? What do you use yours for and does it have any benefits over the 12g thanks in advance. Toombsy
Save your money mate and put it towards that 17HMR your still looking for! 410s are perfect for teaching youngsters, for a spot of ratting and for close-range rabbits, but your 12g can do all those things anyway! fenix
I have a couple of .410s, one folding and a 3 shot bolt, to be honest they only really get used as light carry if I am really going out to do other stuff. Can be handy for bolting bunnies, but they cost more than a 12 to run. Do have a mate that uses a silenced .410 and loves it, he carries it while out on the tractor. One plus point is they tend to be cheap to buy, old bolt actions can be picked up cheap, think I was given my first one.
luckytrigger
i used to have a .410 moderated pump used soley for ratting ive since sold it on an use airrifle/rimfire which costs less but doesnt have quite as much of the fun factor as blasting them with a .410 :look: Edited February 6, 2009 by luckytrigger
shootnfish
rats around the garden and in fields next to garden, great for old roland!
jonevo
I tend to use mine for squirrel, bolting rabbit and the odd pigeon, even Pheasants Advantages nice and light,to carry, no recoil, more of a pop than a bang when close to livestock. Disadvantages,Less power than a 12g,cartridges quite expensive for a small load and slightly underpowered when needed for longer range. Just depends what task you are doing, dont expect it to preform like a 12g for pigeon etc Cartridges prefer to use eley fourlong No
cubix
Perhaps taking woodies and greys from trees without damaging the trees or leaving shot embedded in them? (that's not good for later chainsaw work!).
tony2
i use a moderated .410 i shot over 50 rabbits last season with it, 22 pigeons and 20 rats.as for the power as i understand it they are equal to a 12 only less shot.

MerseaDavid
I use mine for shooting rats and generally anything else. :look: We have got three 410's (1 bolt action, 1 O/U and 1 silinced) They are a good little gun and I have shot many crows and pigeons with them. lapwing
A much overtooked tool for casualty animals. I use a folding .410 as most of the time now for eg road casualty deer, elderly rams etc.. Small, discrete, quiet, very effective at 4" range, and no riccochet worries. A lot more devastating than a .22 at close range, and much safer than a centrefire rifle by a road. But of limited use as a sporting gun. Edward
I use mine more than my escort now (for walking around) I use it for greys woddies rats bunnies, pretty much anything you are alowed to shoot and in range

auto culto
I have a .410 hushpower. But I would not have an un-moderated .410 as you may as well just use the 12g as its cheaper to feed

scout
Thanks for all the replies. Thought I'd made up my mind not to get 1, but now very much in two minds again. Can see a place in the cabinet for one, just because of it's weight and ease of use.

If you have a lot of walking to do then they are worth it but get the hushpower as its a very versatile tool
