Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Hi all, dead eye duck, myzeneye and your humble scribe are out this morning on a fresh drilled field after woodies. We are shooting over a field that has beendrilled with peas so hopes are high for a little later in the year but guard duty for now. We choose our spot and i soon have the hide up whilst don fiddles around getting some lofters up and matty sets out the decoy pattern. YTS is snoozing late in bed so matty is promoted to senior YTS this morning and proudly stands back to admire his decoy pattern....... Oh the trials of being a mentor as i explain the birds are all facing the wrong way, and the opening for his pattern is at the wrong end so off he scampers to make the requesite corections and we are ready for the off, all we need now are some pigeons. As usual don is first into the fray with an easy peasy bird flying straight down his barrels at 20yds range, he then misses the next few in glorious style. Your humble scribe next hits a very difficult 35yd bird crossing right to left and with matt also knocking one down all is well with the world. We send superdog out for the slain, and she returns with the first. I send her out again but she stops outside the hide with a look of bewilderment HA HA HA some feathers are stuck to her eyebrow obscuring her view so once vision is restored and the feathery sunshade removed she returns with matty,s bird wich requires a coup de grace. Don next scores again and true to form once confidence is high my tactics of barracking begin to tell and he is missing in style again HA HA. Your humble scribe is next again with a high overhead bird that takes a full 5 seconds to hit the floor such was its altitude. I bask in my glory amid the derision of the other two. JEALOUSY is a terrible thing. Matt hits a modest bird of dubious parentage, that flew past with only one wing and no tail feathers so as you can no doubt tell travelling fast it was not. Though he did knock it down so full marks for effort. So with 2 each and not long to go before home time, it is my turn to shoot again. All has been quiet for 15 mins when i decide to fire a shot to lift some birds from their perches in the woods. Such is Don's attention to detail and eagle eyed observations skills......NOT!! a bird was passing on his side as i stood up....... said bird was doing mach 2 at least, at least 50yds up. i calmly swung in front and at a modest range of 35yds out i calmly and delicately fired...... rewarded with a satisfying thump as my bird hits the ground and superdog does a wonderful job of retrieveing the bird for me Of course with me being a gentleman of the highest order i didn't point out that i had shot the most birds for the fewest cartridges. And with lunchtime approaching we packed up with a few birds each and a morning spent in good company.

Dead-Eyed Duck
You lying, poaching, teller of gross mistruths. The two highest birds were shot by me and Myzeneye You shot one bird on the ground and one that was flying down yer barrels. Said elderly dog spent most of the morning leaning against the hide and pulling down the hide netting, whilst you were feeling the effects of previous evenings too much imbibement and had a thirst for my coffee like a bedouin in the sahara. However, at least you brought a flask whilst Myzeneye brought only himself..... Still, a good morning Don
myzeneye
i explained...the pleasure of my company should have been enough for you...flasks are for navvies and pensioners... and the only digging you've ever done is to retrieve rebellious ferrets.... anyway... a good write up aid, you should definitely approach the popular childrens publisher "puffin" with any future works of fiction you might pen.... dont believe a word of that lot....he conveiniaitly forgets ,as don says, to mention the two best birds of the day...dons first impressivly high bird and my "last bird of the day"(if i say so myself!) bird to end all birds which was practically going into orbit it was so high.... as don says, aidy was shooting them off the ground not even a sporting chance for the poor woodies... the man is clearly deluded... Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Man if that first picture of the old black doesnt look like my own Cali Rose i do not know what does.. How old is the dog? My Cali girl turns 15 April 11.. Hi LeeinVA, My faithful canine companion "bracken" is 13 this year. Her glory days are behind her but i have shared many happy days shooting over her and as her retirement and her twilight years beckon, i think she has earned the right to make herself comfortable and use the hide netting as a hammock when the shooting part of the team let her down. Many thanks blackthorn, you are obviously a person with a finely tuned taste in literature and can see straight through D.E.D and myzeneye's inane twitterings. thanks for the kind words everyone.
