Got my license coming through in the next few days and i'm looking for my .22lr rifle for some bunnie bashing. I've been looking at getting a ruger 10/22 or a remington 597, Not sure which is the better gun to buy though. What would people recommend for my first .22lr rifle?

Cheers All

Seriously, walk into a RFD ask him what he has in .22lr then try every single one for fit, when you find the ones you like then do a search on here or google, i wouldn`t listen to the personal opinions of forum members that includes me as rifles are a personal thing and what suits one person will not suit another.

I'd second that. I've decided before that I wanted a certain gun, bought it, and then found out it was c**p! Erma M1 :innocent: Oops. Try as many as you can for fit and looks. I know they say looks aren't important, but you need to feel comfortable and confident with your gun. If you convince yourself it's ugly, then you will not be happy with it. Do you know anyone with a gun like you want? Perhaps they will let you try it. That being said, there are an awful lot of custom parts for the Ruger. You can make it fit and look how you want.

Personal choice is a ruger 10/22 Target, you can find spare mags very cheaply for 10/22`s literally everywhere and anywhere and they are cheap, comes with 10 round mag as standard but i have 2 spares already loaded to slap in and carry on shooting. I use mine for vermin and target and it will put subsonics through the same hole at 80yds all day and has a match chamber. lovely guns very under rated but this is my personal opinion.

Its not a shotgun so fit isnt paramount, there all pretty much the same unless ur a midget. Then you want a youth model.

First thing decide what action you want ? Bolt action ? Semi auto ? Lever action ?

Then just check out whats available in your price range and try it out.

Bolt action - CZ's are pretty top notch

Semi - Ruger 10/22 are loved all over the world.

Lever action - I think marlin do some fantastic levers :innocent:

Fit is hugely important in a rifle, i`m not sure which RFD you use but mine has a huge variety of stocks, my 10/22 T was available in 3 different shaped stocks and then there was length of stock, how it feels in your hands is very important, Ruger 10/22 T`s have a large stock grip and large fore-end a friend of mine has small hands and can`t hold the stock or fore-end properly becasue of that, so i can guarantee fit is very important.

If you are on a limited budget get a CZ as these are just as accurate as many guns costing twice as much.

From a personal choice I would a get a bolt action for a first gun, as with a semi it is very tempting to get excited and spray bullets all over the place. The fiddle factor of a semi tempts many people - it is a very, very rare semi that will shoot anywhere near as good as a bolt action, and semi's can be prone to jamming.

You need to be able to get a decent group at 50 yards before you even think of taking it out on quarry.

Get the best scope you can afford as this will pay dividends in the long term - many scopes have very simliar performance in daylight, but the best bunny time is dusk and this is where decent glass will give you an extra half an hours shooting.

People often jump up exotic makes but at 60yds a CZ is goinng to land bullets in a half inch and so is a Sako :D , also a 22's effective range is only about 80yds so, really as long as the bullet lands in the chest there down...and all 22's can at least get 1" groupings at this range  , then it comes down to the reliabilty, I think they are both neck and neck with that so pick which one feels best.
