Need Help!

hi guys need some help and advice if possible.

yesterday i had to go clear out some rabbits for my uncle, he has a small field on a hill side with a stable for his horse, fields about 150 yards long and 60ish tall/wide. due to the horse (which is a welsh cob and can be a right narky ***) and the distances involved i decided to use the 10/22 to take a toll on the rabbit population. so i headed up to my mates farm before hand to make sure the rifle was sighted in (and give him a few shots tomake sure he was on target, as he was coming too). i normally use yellowjackets, which alot of people have a low opinion of, but which after testing 20 or so different brands were the best over all performer for reliability and accuracy in my gun.

anyway we were firing at a target at 50 yards, i always find the quickest and easiest way to sight the gun is to mount a green laser on the scope, aim for the target and fire, then keep the crosshairs on the aiming point and move the green laser dot onto the poi, then i move the crosshairs so they line up with the green dot as it saves chasing rounds all over the place - simple! but yesterday things just wouldnt go right. i started off getting a 1" group with 5 rounds, they were about an inch and a half to the right and the same high, so i rezeroed, and this is when the trouble began. when i fired again i got a 3.5" group, so went and put more paper up and tried again. this group was almost 5"! thinking it was maybe just me i got richie to have a go, and his groups were the same!

i started thinking the scope maybe wasnt totaly holding zero then, so flicked the green laser back on and put it to the centreof the crosshairs, thinking that if the scope was wandering a bit i would see the green dot moving, so started firing again; the green dot stayed right in the middle of the crosshairs but the rounds started making a line towards the left, slightly dropping as they went. we used 100 rounds or so before we brought the groups back to 1" and put another 50 through it to check, they were fine. so we were happy to go after the rabbits, putting it down to us maybe being off. when we arrived at the field i spotted a rabbit at 60 yards, leant on a gate and put a round right through its chest. but the next two shots at about the same range were clean misses, so the rifle was dumped back in the car and the shotguns came out

so does anyone have any ideas? could it just be a bad batch of ammo? or could it be something a bit more serious? im starting to get te,pted to trade the ruger in and go for a bolt action after yesterdays performance

Very sensible. You can share in the warm, smug feeling the owners of bolt-action .22s have when listening to tales of woe about misfires, feeding issues and accuracy in 10/22s.

sorry should have said originally, theres no moderator, scope mounts are one piece see through ones like these

that screw directly into the receiver, plus theyve been locktited on, so its defo not that. at the mo i have the original stock with barrel band fitted, not sure if thats good or not, but 6 weeks ago i was getting a 3" group at 100m with the exact same setup and the same batch of ammo, thats why this is so annoying!

cheers

Cant say ive ever used that ammo or how consistent it could or couldnt be

U havent had the stock off the rifle have you?Ive heard the screw underneath the gun holding the stock on

can dethread/strip threads if overtightened quite easily which would cause inconsistent poi.

I would put money on it not being an actual prob with the gun as such more like somethng along scope/ammo/action fitment to stock if that makes sense.

Soz i will reread the thread but is the poi the same place in relation to the laser sight and the scope or does it differ?

yep sorry everytime i take it out i give the breach and receiver a good scrub with an old tooth brush, and pull through the barrel a couple of times :good:

just into work so ill head to the shop later and get a few different brands of ammo and try them later in the week, really dont understand why it took this hissy fit but i'll see if different ammo sorts it

i havent fired that many rounds through my 22 in one session like you have, but i have used mine whilst out rabbit shooting on a golf course before and had the same trouble so now after about 25 shots i quickly pull the barrel through and i dont get the problem any more

think ive found the problem, the crown looks to have a couple of small burrs in it (missed them the other day) so ill try to recrown it and see what happens, did a search here and saw a thread baldrick had posted about doing it by hand with a bb and grinding paste so think ill give that a go :hmm:

im tempted to go for a bolt, saw a nice cz (think) a few months back, had wood right up to the muzzle and i think had a bit of a schnaebel tip, was only £500 - anyone know what it might have been?!

BUT

ive got to buy a rifle and a shotgun in latvia this year too, and my job is very shaky at the mo, so i have to make do with the 10/22 for the moment anyway, then if this doesnt sort out the accuracy probs ill start saving

this one? click!

yeah theyre normally very consistent, a few weeks ago i was getting a group of about 2" or so at 100m, the other day i was struggling to keep it under 5" at 50m! theres a few small burrs on the crown so ill try that, then itll either be new barrel or new gun
