This is why I asked the question about a head shot. Nothing wrong with a head shot in the right conditions. The fox could have turned at the very last moment, and it's jaw could have been blown apart. I would not take a head shot at distance, not even with my 22-250 or 243.

like i say i would not take a shot like that myself even if i did have an fac which i dont

Being an ex gamekeeper and full time pest controller on over thirty farms shooting all week everyday I thought you would have had an FAC?

Can't believe there hasn't been a more damming reply so here it comes..........

I dont know your "mate" but IMHO he needs his **** kicking for attempting such a stupid shot. Wouldn't think twice with a centrefire, but even then I wouldn't dream of a headshot - what's the point, do you eat your foxes or is just for bragging rights down the pub? The room for error is tiny, as proved by where the shot has landed and irrespective of his marksmanship, the round is running out of energy and velocity quickly at that range.

I hope it was a poorly estimated distance, but the HMR is not the tool to be shooting foxes with at that range, and to attempt a headshot is pure stupidity. I wonder if you'd have been quite so keen to show us photos of a fox which had had its jaw shot off which you caught up with days later.

I have an HMR and as a rimfire, it impresses me regularly but when will people realise there is a time and a place to use one - headshooting foxes at ranges approaching 200yds is not one of them.

I didn't intend this reply to be the standard "holier than thou" effort, but by christ I never fail to be gobsmacked by what comes up on here :hmm:

Its all about how confident you are, I know an old boy that would neck shoot deer at 200 yds.

fair play to your friend good shot.

Come again? You can be as confident as you like but do you have any control over the animal you are shooting?? It only needs to move a fraction of an inch and you've just inflicted horrendous and probably not immediately fatal injuries. Your statement might stand up more (barely in my eyes) if the thread was discussing a shot with a CF - but there is just far too much to go wrong with a tiny projectile like the HMR at those ranges.

The beauty of a HMR :hmm:  :good:

more like luck, could have easily left the fox badly injured. Over 100yds on fox with a HMR is foolish and shows little respect in my opinion.

dont know why he he shot it in the head my mate just did lol never know why he dose these things lmao :hmm:

The .17 HMR is fast becoming the bain of my opinion these days...... Yes most of us own one but this little calibre is 'in between' calibres.

This I feel is becoming a danger to the whole preservation of the sensible target quarry/ range scenario.....

This is by no means a dig at you but does anyone eat fox? its a genuine question, i assumed they were ditched, buried or burned?
