reaper6
Large black cats have been reported all over the country for years. Why has no one shot or caught one?
baxterboy
Back in April i saw a panther, i was 70 yards away from it, my only problem was that day i was out with me air rifle, if i would of had a cf, i would of had a go at it, Shaun. Would you be prepared to stake your FAC on that? I wouldn't however sensible it may seem to shoot it.
CharlieT
It was worrying livestock there you go you got an excuse. If I had a rifle I wouldnt mind getting one. Worrying livestock is not an excuse though. You would need a specific condition for your rifle on your cert to be able to do so. I very much doubt anyone has such a condition. Having said that if one was killing my sheep I would shoot first and argue with the police later. What has always surprised me is that a pack of foxhounds has never, to my knowledge, flushed one. magman
I very much doubt anyone has such a condition Humane dispatch maybe ?
CharlieT
magman I have humane dispatch (humane killing of animals) on mine but I don't think they mean that sort of humane.
Baldrick
I have humane despatch and dangerous game on my ticket, but I doubt those conditions cover such a quarry on British soil.
Ferret Master
Charlie, I can only think the reason the hunt packs haven't flushed them (to my knowledge) is the noise the average hunt makes. These cats are shy by nature and will be long gone before they can be flushed including up a tree with some species. Secondly hounds that riot on the scent of other mammals are not generally appreciated so that could be a reason? Input from NTTF on his cat hounds appreciated. markbivvy
So if one was to show itself in front of a guy with a 308 for instance and proceeded to walk towards him growling and spitting or what ever they do. the correct procedure is to turn and run because you dont have the right condition on your ticket. judged by 12 or carried by 6. benbrown1994
When I was out deer stalking one morning, there was a long strip of maize to our left, and down one of the sides of this strip of maize I saw a large "black" thing. Not sure what it was but it was around the same height as a black dust bin, I see it move as soon as we spotted it, but then it just walked into the maize and I didnt see it again. Cranfield
Regarding fox hounds not flushing a "black cat", hounds are trained onto a scent and rarely hunt other scents.
markbivvy
so your out with your favourite dog stalking deer, dog has its nose down tails going then it start barking at a clump of bushes. out comes a large panther type cat and heads for your dog you cant shoot the cat as you dont have the condition. njc110381
There's no question you would shoot it, but would you risk telling anyone?

geordieh
Hi Lads One of the conditions on my fac is "the shooting of animals for the protection of other animals or humans"so if it was stalking my dog or one of my farmers livestock i would be legally allowed to shoot it Geordie Edited June 7, 2009 by geordieh

That's a bit different Mark. There's a difference between shooting it because you're in fear of your life and seeing one at 100 yards and having a plink at it. We're almost into the realms of do you shoot a dog if it's worrying sheep. Absolute minefield and the onus of proof that the shot was justified rests with the shooter. I'd maybe shoot one if it was about to cuddle up to me (if I could stop crapping my pants long enough) but with my max calibre being .243 would it have the legs to do the job or just **** the damned thing off even more, and would I have time to get the shot in? Do we actually know enough about them and how they behave to be able to say how we'd react? Most of us (including me) NO.
