badshot
So you are wanting info on the .17 mach2 not the .17hmr, Quite different beasts love the hmr myself. Kill rate is stupendous, one shot is close to one kill, very rarely miss at any range up to 150yds, even better with the wildcat Whisper I put on it the other week. I don't find it any more expensive to use than the .22lr because the shot to kill ratio is so much better, and i don't need to get anywhere near as close. The pickup rate is also much higher as there are a lot less runners. .22 barrel tends not to get used much at all these days.
AndyCM
I thought the glut of blue tip Hornady hmr ammo was repackaged hm2 tips (because hm2 sales bombed having no benefit over the hmr) Hornady rounds for the hmr were always red tips until recently - is that the real story or does anyone believe the one I heard in a local shop...that Hornady messed up the plastic dye Edited August 23, 2009 by AndyCM
Evil Elvis
even better with the wildcat Whisper I put on it the other week. How much differrence does it make?
badshot
How much differrence does it make? Well, the last mod was dying and got dangerous, (bits dropping down into the path of the bullet), compared to that it is a revelation in performance. Seriously though tried it at v.close range finishing off a fox that refused to die for a 223 round and it was absolutely silent, just the impact noise. The further away you are the more the crack is there from the bullet going supersonic. It is a really well made piece of kit and the main reason I chose it is because it is an over the barrel one and makes the rifle more pointable. Stripped it for cleaning last night after about 75 rounds and could not believe the **** left in it. All these non cleaners would do well to see it, might make them change their mind. I would think that after 500 rounds there would be so much in there it would not be doing the job it was intended to and getting as dangerous as my old one. Interestingly my old mod made the blue tips hit inch low and left compared to remington ammo, whereas the whisper was close to the same poi. monkeymagic1969
I have one Mark (Sako Quad with Mach II barrel) its an excellent little round and will shoot bunnies at 150yrds no problem, ammo is less than twice the cost of HMR (can get it for £4.20 a box), and is as easy to shoot as the hmr. I will admit that they are no quite as potent as the hmr and dont seem to expoldebunnies heads in the same way,but they are a damn good round and i would not exchange mine for either a .22 or HMR. ( bet your glad i replied B) )
casts_by_fly
Hi Mark, The Mach 2 is the same as the HMR, less 60 yards. It is the exact same bullet, just from a different cartridge. The HMR at 60 yards is going the same speed as the HM2 at the muzzle. Effectively, that means if the HMR is a 160 yard gun for you (which is about what it is realistically) then the HM2 is a 100 yard gun. If the price difference here is like it is in the US (half price for HM2 vs HMR) then I'd take the HM2 over the HMR anyday for routine rabbit control. In fact, when I get back to the US I have a 10/22 build on the brain converted to HM2. That would be a lot of fun. Thanks, Rick
markbivvy
Thanks gents and Paul. my HMR does not get used at all now, its cheaper to use the hornet, plus it has more hitting power and i can use it on charlie. and the .22 rf bounces to much. Chance of a second user rifle looks slim, whats the damage on a new one please.
monkeymagic1969
I paid £500 for my Sako including scope, Mod, Bipod,Sling & 350 rounds of ammo - gun was in mint condition and had only had 150 rounds through it. There is a New Sako Quad on gun trader for £650 ( same as the one i have) Edited August 24, 2009 by monkeymagic1969
tweedledee
i would love to try the mach 2 but could n`t find any dealers here who stocked the ammo.i went hmr instead.bet the mach 2 is a brilliant little round

monkeymagic1969
Its a cracking little round, better than a .22 and cheaper to feed than an HMR - was out with it last night and was bowling bunnies over at 100-125 yrds on a regular basis. It will also put down a charlie at sensible ranges too B)
natcot
Another fan of this round here, at least in principle, as I can neither afford or find a nice second hand deal! John Forsey Guns advertise this rifle (synthetic version) for £469, and I've read good things about this gun shop. http://www.johnforsey.co.uk/rifles.html Most people think this round is a waste of time but I believe (hope) it's a bit of a hidden gem, fingers crossed that ammunition remains available.
