Sugar beet harvest

Beet harvest is due to start very soon . I look forward to getting some decent bags on the harvested fields . Beet stubble used to be really good shooting when it was harvested by the old type of harvester . Nowadays the machinery is so precise that not much beet gets chopped up and left on the field . But I still manage to get some good shooting off it . The good thing about the beet harvest is that it lasts right through out the winter and can be the main stay of pigeon shooting along side the rape .

I have seen a few fields harvested already.

Just been watching the machine taking the beet off the marsh today ,being taken it off for two days now and what surprised me was the amount of beet left behind after the harvester has moved on to the next rows. One advantage of that is there is plenty of feed for the Geese when they arrive which should be any day now.

The good thing about the beet harvest is that ...........

The farmers have left the tumblers untouched since the last harvest and as soon as they start them up there's hydraulic oil everywhere as the seals have dried and cracked. I worked for an hydraulic engineering outfit in Spooners Row and this repair work was our annual 'bonus'.
