Any advice on the wash/foreshore for total newbies on wildfowling. Even though we both been shooting for 4 years. widgeon man Posted September 19, 2016 Report Share Posted September 19, 2016 Go with some one experienced to start..... Then Start with a spot and learn it ..... Creeks, how to navigate on and off around any big creeks, watch and note tides covering marsh, so you know where a 6,7 or 8m tide 'should' make. When you 'know' a spot so you can navigate in darkness or tide pushing, learn another section of marsh. Try not to use a light to navigate on marsh.... ( particularly on eve flight when others might still be shooting) always carry a wading staff/compass Slowly you will understand the marshes quirks and success will follow if you put the time in. widgeon man Posted September 19, 2016 Report Share Posted September 19, 2016 I don't shoot gedney, but nearby.The wash can be v.dangerous..... Treat it with respect and do not venture past a creek you can't cross to start. Myself and another fowler had to stop a newbie from trying to drown himself last season.... No idea of the danger or HOW the tide would come in, which was from behind. marsh man Posted September 19, 2016 Report Share Posted September 19, 2016 Use your first season as a learning curve , study the area in daylight hours ,creeks , liggers , footpath ect and you can use the daylight for bird identity and like Widgeon says , have you got a dog ? , if not its advisable to go out with someone who have got one . The most important item in your chosen area is certainly the tides , last weekend was a full moon and a strong N / E wind which pushed a lot of water up on what was already a big tide and if you were out on unfamiliar ground you could easily get in serious trouble. So depending on how much time you have got and how often you intend going , try and go with someone who know the area and is willing to take you and show you the safety side of fowling ( your club can give you some names ) , then make sure you , LOOK , LEARN and LISTEN . widgeon man Posted September 19, 2016 Report Share Posted September 19, 2016 If you don't have a trained dog I would suggest avoiding shooting tides, concentrating on morn/eve with low water so you can pick birds. I know some experienced fowlers without dogs, however it obviously restricts their sport and they have to be very disciplined. I believe i met your mate Andy on the range last season !!!!!!!The OP WILL be taken by experienced club members until they feel they have enough knowledge/experience to not put themselves or other in Danger. I also know with out a dog it's going to be a big handicap and limit the shooting a fair bit. I'm eager to learn and except it's not all going to fall into place as been told it takes a few season to learn the foreshore. But what i would do is during the day when other Fowlers have left the Marsh do some fact finding BUT beware that when tides are suitable Fowlers due tide flights during the day. Whilst you're obviously very keen to get pulling the Trigger at first take a very cautious approach even if it means sitting on the Stow Ways or Gradge Banks at first.Don't forget judging shooting ranges is also difficult due the open space on the Foreshore. Try and learn what Quarry Ducks and Geese look and fly like especially important in the half light and Moon light. It's a no gun affair but it's to show us around and to ask questions can't wait 8n to Sunday now. Join, people will take you out. Better to get out with a few people and get a few shots and get to enjoy it. Then get out on your own to learn the area you have shot. Although a breakfast or a pint after certainly would help make things more attractive for guides and then you can ask them questions while keeping quiet on the marsh...
