  1. a light weight 20 bore and 21 gramme cartridges is probably the way to go, worked for my daughter. just make sure its a dedicated 20 bore action and not just a 12 with 20 barrels as some are. probably want to keep the barrel length down to 28" as well i bought a rizzini for my daughter which is just over 6lb. i've had a round with it and was nice with 21gramme cartridges, but not nice with 28 grammes ones.
  2. personally have seen more people waving around closed o/u's at grounds out of the stands (and in carparks) than i have people who have been doing the same with semi auto's. every man and his dog jumps on semi auto shooters, but how does anyone know a closed o/u isnt loaded ? i shoot a semi auto around 75% of the time and i personally hate the safety flags, cant stand the faffing around with them and more than once have had them stuck in where the extractor has caught on it. gun handling is down to the individual, and in the case of anyone inexperienced it should be the responsibility of whoever has taken them to the ground, or as with the clubs i shoot at if they are not a guest of a member then they are required to make themselves known to the safety officer who will either supervise them for their first visit to assess that they have a good understanding of gun safety and handling, or put them with an experienced group of club members who will look after them.
  3. ask someone with a bit of experience to come along with you.
  4. i've a couple of beretta's and they do it as well. it seems to be the longer optima type ones which do it worst though. in fairness though most of mine are semi auto's with the extended chokes and as these only get hand tightened they do work slightly loose as you shoot the stand. know what you mean though, got so used to the beretta dirty chokes that when i'm using one that doesnt do it it seems weird at cleaning time when you take them out and theyre clean. i have found a slight smear of white grease on the choke thread and a film of oil on the choke tube works best for me. with a film on the outside of the choke the gunk literally wipes off when cleaning.
  5. mines insured with aviva, modifications declared, and was hundreds cheaper than the comparison sites. direct line were cheaper but insisted on having the tracker re activated, the saving in cost was less than the tracker subscription though.
  6. my daughter started wit a 12 and found it too heavy. she's gone to a 20 gauge and is much happier, cartridges are a bit more but she's currently using 21gramme fibres and is getting on fine with it. i would have thought budget will be a deciding factor, if it allows why not try a beretta ultralight if you want to stick to 12 gauge. i picked up a secondhand rizzini for my daughter, fixed choke, 28" barrels for £330 and its in really nice condition. i've had a try with the 21 gramme cartridges and its nice to shoot, also tried some heavier ones and it wasnt nice to shoot.
  7. my effort for the 25 yard standing target. freestanding no support or cheating... gun used is a S410TDR .177 one flyer that i knew when i let it off, but thats the way it goes. group sizes 32, 33, 36, and 50mm with the bad shot, take the 1 out and that group is much better......lol come on get some more up guys
  8. if it was mine, i'd strip out the bolt and trigger assembly, then remove the stock, and then you should have the receiver and spring tube only left. i would try some spray brake cleaner in the spring tube and see if this cleans any gunk out and then lightly re oil the spring tube. if you remove the 2 screws in the butt pad you should see the nut which holds the stock to the receiver, cant remember the size but its just a socket and ratchet job. assuming its got a shim between the stock and receiver make a note of the way round its fitted, and likewise if theres a shaped washer/plate under the nut you take off. mine had a plastic butt pad so you could see the screw heads but yours sounds like its got a softer/rubber pad so the screws will be under the surface, if it has put a bit of vaseline on the screwdriver before pushing it through the pad sold mine a few years ago so cant remember if these have the shims for drop/cast the same as the 391's but be methodical and it should work fine
  9. In my opinion yes. for my clay guns I have skeet and light modified chokes, use light mod for pretty much everything except close stuff then I'll swap to skeet. personally very rarely use anything tighter for sporting clays. its all about having confidence in what you're using
  10. my understanding is 16" gives you maximum velocity, although any losses either way are very marginal. the 16" barrel length is an american thing, its their minimum length which is why a lot of aftermarket ruger barrels, tactical solutions etc are that length, its not to do with barrel accuracy or bullet velocity.
  11. from what i read before deciding on mine the powder is burnt in the first 9". barrel length after 16" slows the bullet. mines got a 12.5" volquartsen barrel and no complaints about that. theres quite a bit of info floating about on the net, and rimfire central forum is a good place to have a browse of if you're looking at rugers.
  12. you'll notice how dirty the end of your gun will get with the ported ones.
  13. we had a play on the skeet ranges, pay for the key at reception. only been there a couple of times, but enjoyed it there. we went up before xmas for their friday deal of clays and lunch, and had a couple of rounds left over as we didnt get time on the friday to finish.
  14. we shot dartford last saturday and that was just turn up, pay for your key thingy for the counter, and off you trot........was cold and windy there though.
  15. not handled one but it looks like it must be front heavy.
  16. one of the clubs i shoot at used to sell them. they were a dirty cartridge, personally didnt like them. they've changed to kents now which seem better for similar money.
  17. the 400 xcel is completely different inside to the 391tenkys, its much more like the extrema 2 inside. receiver seems deeper on the xcel and it feels a lot lighter than the 391 i had. dont know if youve seen one in thew flesh but the blue is not a bright as it appears in brochures etc. kickoff and gunpod are options on the xcel, a lot of people feel the kickoff alters the guns balance and that it balances better without it, its not needed on a gun that is primarily aimed at clay shooting, pretty soft shooting without it. optima hp chokes are used which are the same as the prevail and i'm pretty sure some of the extrema's and the ugb sporter used these as well.
  18. got a trap monte carlo fully adjustable one. love it. mine is around 2 years old and came with the 10 year transferable warranty. the only negative i can think of is that theres no ejector, so if youre shooting trap and have to unload to move stand its can be a bit of a pain till youve got the hang of it. normal beretta semi auto issue with extended chokes that work themselves loose, but again not a problem. very soft shooting and mines been 100% reliable.
  19. try changing the breech block o ring. both the hw's i had lost air, both cured by changing the o ring.
  20. personally i'd go skeet light mod improved mod for sporting/rough i use light mod for pretty much everything but when on the clays take the skeet and improved mod in case theres a pair that are close or far away.
  21. get into the habbit of checking its tight every couple of shots. i've has semi auto's that have done the same thing. doesnt want to be any tighter than hand tight, not ringing its neck tight. guys that i shoot clays with normally give the forend nut a check along with the extended chokes on beretta's when they get into the stand, before loading and while its still flagged. the forend nut you can give a quick tweek to easily enough.
  22. common problem with the hw's is the o ring inside the breech block is too big. the guns are manufactured this way and the o ring is crushed, normally ok to start with but most eventually leak. its the first thing i'd change in one that was leaking....both of the hw's i've owned have had this problem. theres quite a bit of info on the net about it and the seals can be bought for a couple of pence each.....try just bearings when you find the size.....pretty sure it was 12x1mm but check the net first. forgot to add, if you're going to go fac dont bother with the hw's, they reportedly arent much cop above 12 ft/lb, supposedly the accuracy suffers. in my opinion if you're going fac it should be a daystate, or at a push a theoben......but a daystate really.
  23. used them before the pshq europe site chokes came from us no problems. bit of a wait for delivery but around half the price of brileys bought from uk.
  24. hi. is the price for everything in the pic or just a single weight ?
