  1. Great piece of kit, congrats! Are you going to use slug? If so, will you be fitting iron sights / red dot? I've some iron sights which clamp to the vent rib. Pretty good but I had to loctite them to prevent them vibrating loose. All the best with the comp. DVC Andy
  2. Neither are listed in Barnes' or the 'Ammo Encyclopedia' - I suspect that it is a typo. unless they are a very unusual 'wildcat' round! Andy
  3. I also regularly act as a referee on FACs. (I'm a club secretary). Sometimes (rarely) they ring to check if the person is a regular shooter, registered axe murderer etc. No real hassle. Andy
  4. Interesting comment re use of rifle ammo on a 'pistol' range. You certainly need to make sure that you operate within the limitations of the range. People are getting more and more 'twitchy' about this sort of thing! We are fortunate on our range, limitations are only MV and ME. The ranges at Bisley are especially tricky. Nothing over 3280fps MV which makes it very difficult for anyone wanting to zero their .17Rem or .22-250!! Andy
  5. Andy H is absolutely right. Oddly enough, you can have a single shot or double barrel with a rifled tube (on FAC). Apparently, they are quite popular in some parts of Europe where they don't have the same problems as us. I believe that some choke manufacturers even make a rifled choke! Andy
  6. Ian88 I've a s1 Benelli SuperNova which I can use on a range for target shotgun. The 'cheap' (about £50 / 100) slugs designed for practical shotgun are generally lower power than those intended for boar shooting etc. Legitimate use other than on a range will be very limited in the UK and the police do seem to be very twitchy about use of shotgun slugs. If they read the comment about shooting at doors then that twitchiness is clearly justified! (I presume it was a joke. If not, you really need to gain an understanding of external/terminal ballistics and firearms safety before moving beyond airsoft). Shotgun slugs can riccochet just like .22rf and anyone copping a tumbling slug even at a few hundred yards is going to be spending some time with the undertaker ... Obviously, the ammo is s1 but you can use slugs in a shotgun, either s1 or s2, of the appropriate bore and the usual recommendation is not to use more than about half-choke. I have a Red-dot type sight fitted (Eotech) without any magnification and can generally achieve good 'field' accuracy of about 4" groups at 50M. Andy
  7. JonD I'm the Secretary of an HO Approved Club. Its the club that should be getting you the manual. They have to order them from the NRA (and pay for them). Depending on the club, the manual may be included in the cost of joining or they may charge extra. Incidentally, do you know if their Chairman will then sign you off for an NRA Safe Shooter System Certification card? (Req'd to shoot at Bisley & MoD ranges). It sounds as if you've already tried speaking with Phyllis Farnan at the NRA (out of office reply says 'on leave' until 22nd if I remember correctly). I don't know if they will provide individuals with the book - frankly, I would question how much of it is of use without someone there to talk you through it. Kind regards Andy (NRA Club Instructor)
  8. Hi guys, I also have a s1 shotgun - a Benelli SuperNova pump. Of course, use of slug ammo is restricted (in my case) to suitable range use. However, the gun (as per the explanation given by subwoofer) may be used for clayshooting. It specifically states that as a condition on my FAC and forms part of the 2002 Guidance Notes. A gentle word in the lug 'ole of the FEO should suffice. Alternatively, get BASC to have a word, if you are a member. Best wishes Andy
  9. Some interesting stuff here. Personally, I would never use anything like Facebook. A friend of mine is a manager in on of the High Street Banks. She always laughs when anyone mentions Facebook. It's common practice for managers to look through facebook trawling for the names of staff members. She tells me its amazing what people will put on there for everyone to read. E.g. "My name's X and I'm pulling a 'sicky' today HA!HA!" They look really surprised when they get called in to the managers office for a 'chat'!!! Of course, we are all very circumspect about what we say in an open forum. You could either get a visit from 'anti's' - they WILL read these forums or, from half a dozen blokes who ask very nicely for your safe keys .... What did they used to say? "Careless talk costs lives." Safe shooting Andy
  10. Hi Skid, South West side of the city. If I stand on my tip-toes I can see the old Totley rifle range Andy
  11. I remember thinking when I got my recent BASC renewal that I had to 'look' for the card! Plastic would therefore be easier I suppose. It might also have a greater perceived value than plasticised card Andy
  12. Imperfection, If you are interested in SMLEs in particular or Lee-Enfield rifles in general, I thoroughly recommend that you approach these people: www.leeenfieldrifleassociation.org.uk/ The url is pretty self explanatory! I'm not a member - I don't (head hung low) have a Lee Enfield; I just borrow one if I want to scratch that particular itch. Some rifle clubs will be more welcoming than others - I'm generalising, but some of the precision rifle shooters may look down their noses at the older stuff. I strongly recommend that you try a club which you feel 'comfortable' with. Once you get in with the right crowd they will steer you towards your FAC upon completion of the mandatory probationary period. If you choose not to reload .303 (equivalent to MkVII ball) is available from Privi Partisan, Sellior & Bellot and Kynoch/Kynamco - prices are all over the place but will probably be around £40 / hundred, upwards. Andy
  13. The Eotech sight is definitely a superb bit of kit. The guy I got mine from was a able to supply at well below UK wholesale price, otherwise I could never have afforded one. He's not got any in stock now and the Americans seem to be exporting most of their Eotech for military use. Magtech slugs are grouping sub 3" at 50 M. As for the SN it's a 'tool'. I've absolutely no emotional attachment - it is an excellent bit of kit which 'does what it says on the tin'. For rapidfire some would prefer the Rem 870. If you pull back on the slide, when you fire the action will rack back in one movement. With the SN, it is fire, then rack the slide a distinctive separate action. However, the comfortech stock is for me, the dogs do-da's! Very comfortable and with a user interchangeable high cheekpiece it means I have perfect eye alignment with the Eotech. Reloading is also a doddle as the ramp allows you to feed in two slugs at a time. The side saddle (with piccatinny rail) is a Mesa Tactical. I had an RFD friend drill and tap the receiver for the side saddle. I like it. Some people hate them. Using Brenneke or Sauvestre slugs it would be great for wild boar. Alternatively, in s2 guise with the 3. 1/2" chamber it makes a good fowling gun, I'm sure. Cheers Andy
  14. I've had one or two double takes when I've taken it out through Manchester or Stansted! A
  15. Benelli SuperNova w/Eotech sight and Mesa tactical side saddle
  16. Hi Jase, Andy (Steel100) here. Just joined the other day and located the other side of town. Your 'close mate' wouldn't be John would it? A
  17. Deadeye, I get involved with a lot of Historic rifle shooting and a lot of the shooters use prvi partisan, sellier and bellot or Kynoch (Kynamco). Some of the older milsurp. and Greek HXP still turns up but more and more of those who don't bother reloading seem to end up with the above. I don't reload .303 but given the cost of components, particularly powder it's actually quite a close run thing between reloading to MkVII spec or buying factory. If you go along to one of the bigger events at Bisley when there are traders there you can often get a deal by shopping around - and you sometimes don't have to pay 'southern' prices. Andy
  18. HW682 Great. I'm on the South West side of the city. I can see Derbyshire from my front window. I lived in the Hope Valley for years and I went to school in Bakewell. A
  19. Having looked at all the promo. stuff on the new Vinci, irrespective of whether anyone likes it or not, it may be all academic. The gun is of course made for the world market as a S1 shotgun 3+1. The accepted practice of crimping / swaging the mag. tube or providing one that is a max. of two shots won't be enough I believe. The Vinci needs the mag. tube to be removeable as part of the takedown process. I doubt if the Home Office will pass it in that form as they usually require the mag. tube to be non-detachable .... Anyone any experience of this type of thing? Andy
  20. Hi All, I've been shooting for over 40 yrs if you count airguns! However, I've not had the opportunity for live quarry shooting for a number of years and I want to get back in to rough / vermin shooting and stalking. Member of BASC, NRA etc. I'm a reloader and have a variety of S1 and S2 'stuff'. Hope to learn something on here! Cheers Andy
